In Tomeşti, religious architectural history, local traditions and natural heritage stand alongside one another as distinct themes. Vlădiceni Monastery connects a specific local history with a distinctive landscape setting; churches, ancient oak trees and a designated Natura 2000 site complete the picture. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whether cultural history, nature or a journey along the regional road connection is your main focus.

Vlădiceni Monastery: Architecture, Landscape and Tradition

Vlădiceni Monastery is located in the village of Vlădiceni, within the commune of Tomeşti, on the historic site known in the chronicles as “Poiana Vlădicăi.” According to tradition, in 1415 Prince Alexandru cel Bun and Metropolitan Iosif Mușat met there as a procession carrying the relics of Saint John of Trapezunt passed by. The clearing was then named “Poiana Vlădicăi”—a place name that also appears in the chronicles. This story gives the monastery a historical dimension that extends beyond the architecture of the complex.

The bell tower stands at the entrance to the monastery complex, which is surrounded by a stone wall. It has an upper floor and a wide opening. The monastery lies at the foot of a wooded hill, from which the entire industrial district of the city of Iași can be seen. The wooded slope and city panorama create a striking contrast in the description of the place.

The “Ivirita” icon also offers a distinct historical trace: it returned to the monastery in November 2010 and is located on the left side of the naos of the main church. It was painted on Mount Athos in 1930. Both the icon and the stand framing it are made of yew wood. The icon’s origins, return and present location are thus closely connected with the monastery.

Churches and Local Traditions

The churches in Tomeşti and Goruni can be distinguished by their dates and construction. The wooden church of “Întâmpinarea Domnului” in the village of Tomeşti is dated to 1771. In Goruni is the filial church of “Sfântul Nicolae,” built of wood and masonry. The descriptions therefore provide both a specific year and different details about construction.

Religious life is also reflected in community activities: the Catholic community in Tomeşti organizes gatherings, processions, ecumenical celebrations and interfaith camps. Pottery and willow weaving are local traditional practices that could support agritourism in the region. Together, the buildings, community activities and crafts offer different insights into the cultural themes of the area.

Natural Heritage and Further Orientation

The Natura 2000 site ROSPA-0042 “Pădurea Bârnova” lies within the commune of Tomeşti. Two oak trees in the village of Vlădiceni, more than 300 years old, are also protected as natural monuments. An illuminated cross and an ecumenical chapel are located on Dealul Ceriului. These named natural and landscape features complement the historical perspective with specific points of interest for travelers who are also interested in natural heritage.

For road orientation, the DN 28 is a useful reference point: it passes through the commune of Tomeşti and connects Iași with Vama Albița; from there, the route continues to Chișinău. If your trip also includes Iași or onward travel toward Chișinău, you can take this connection into account when planning.
