Tulgheş combines hiking destinations with traces of cultural history. When planning your trip, the geographical area is important: Pietrele Roşii and the mineral springs are located within the commune, while the wooden church and mill complex are in Tulgheş. This makes it easier to decide whether you want to focus on a hike, the commune’s landscape, or its architectural and local history.
Hiking Destinations and Landscape
The Pietrele Roşii massif rises above the commune of Tulgheş. A distinct limestone cliff reaches a maximum height of 1,215 metres and offers views of the surrounding area. The Pietrele Roşii nature reserve covers ten hectares within the commune’s administrative boundaries. This destination therefore centres on both the striking rock formation and a clearly defined protected area.
Pietrele Roşii can be reached via the Prisecani forest road, which meets the DN15 at kilometre 223+400. You can follow the marked trail on foot or travel by an off-road-capable vehicle. The DN15 runs through the commune of Tulgheş and connects Moldova with Transylvania; it also provides a broader point of reference for travelling to the region.
Another hiking destination is the 1,609-metre-high Vit-havas peak. Day hikes there are organised in Tulgheş. Confirm that the offer is available in advance. The planning considerations differ: for Vit-havas, it is a question of an organised day hike; for Pietrele Roşii, it is a choice between the marked footpath and an off-road-capable vehicle.
Architectural and Local History
Tulgheş developed after the 17th century, particularly in the 19th century, as local trans-Carpathian routes changed. This historical development provides a timeframe for the history of the village, which can also be traced through individual architectural and technical heritage sites.
The wooden church “Arhanghelii Mihail şi Gavril” in Tulgheş was built in 1828. The “Moara de apă și joagărul Olar Gheorghe” complex is listed as a historic monument under code HR-ll-m-B-12991. The complex’s watermill was built of wood in 1875 and is still operational. The church and the mill complex thus represent different aspects of architectural and technological history.
A monument to the Romanian heroes of the First World War stands in Tulgheş beside the DJ127. The lime kiln at Valea Frumoasă dates from the 18th century. Together with the church and the watermill, these sites illustrate different historical themes: religious heritage, remembrance of the First World War, and traditional technology.
Springs and Regional Activities
There are 30 mineral springs in the commune of Tulgheş. Eleven have been recorded and inventoried; they have a high iron content, a sulphated character, and medium mineralisation. This description adds another aspect of the commune’s natural resources to its hiking destinations.
Local activities also shape the regional context: traditional agriculture and wood processing are practised in the Tulgheş area. Alongside the named buildings and landscape destinations, they offer another point of reference if you are interested in the commune’s different facets.
