In Comuna Păuleni - Ciuc, a distinctive archaeological landscape, church history and local craft traditions come together. The Șoimeni site lies at the foot of the Ciuc Mountains, on a natural promontory. Delnița also offers insight into the area’s medieval history. When planning a trip, you can distinguish between archaeological traces at the site, a museum display in Sfântu Gheorghe and a described Via Mariae route.

Șoimeni and Várdomb

The Șoimeni archaeological site is located within the commune of Păuleni-Ciuc, about one kilometre northeast of the village of Șoimeni. It occupies the natural promontory of Várdomb (Dâmbul Cetății), at an altitude of 882 metres on a connecting saddle between a mountain spur and a hill. The topography is integral to the description of the site: the name refers not to an isolated peak, but to a promontory in the surrounding landscape.

The site is considered the most important site with remains of the Costișa culture in Transylvania. Archaeological investigations uncovered numerous portable finds, many of which were classified as “treasures”. The National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians presents an archaeological exhibition entitled “Așezarea preistorică Păuleni-Ciuc Dâmbul Cetății”. Most of the objects discovered at Dâmbul Cetății are currently on display in the permanent exhibition “Așezarea preistorică de la Păuleni-Ciuc” at the museum’s main building in Sfântu Gheorghe. Check the current visitor and exhibition arrangements before your visit.

Church history and the site at Delnița

In Delnița, a medieval archaeological site lies beside the village church, at the place called Tordavölgye. Finds recorded there include a necropolis dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The present-day freestanding Church of St John the Baptist was built between the mid- and late 15th century. The parish is first documented in writing in the papal tithe register of 1332–1333. These dates refer to different periods in the area’s history: the early written record concerns the parish, while the construction date refers to the present-day church.

The Roman Catholic Church in Păuleni-Ciuc offers a different point of reference in time. It was built in 1943 and consecrated in 1949. Together with the medieval church in Delnița, it shows that the localities preserve different chapters of church history, rather than representing just one period.

Carpet weaving and local experiences

The patterned wool carpets of the Ciuc region are influenced by Turkish designs and are still made in Păuleni-Ciuc. Local availability may vary. The history of textile crafts goes back further: women from Păuleni-Ciuc once wove garments for the Franciscan monks of Csíksomlyó. A continuing carpet-making tradition thus sits alongside a craft practice passed down from the past.

Local hosts offer carriage rides and demonstrations of chimney cake baking and traditional carpet weaving. Arrange these activities with the hosts in advance. This distinction is useful when planning a trip: carpet-making is an ongoing local craft tradition, while demonstrations and rides are experiences whose timing you should arrange locally.

Via Mariae: understanding the stage details

Routes of different lengths are described for the Via Mariae. The route from Ghimeș Făget via Delnița and Păuleni Ciuc to Șumuleu Ciuc is listed as two days and a total of 47.5 kilometres. For the second day, a stage from Lunca de Sus via Delnița and Păuleni Ciuc to Șumuleu Ciuc is given as 26.8 kilometres and 9 hours 45 minutes. This daily figure refers to the stage, not to the entire two-day route. Check the latest route details before planning.

A report dated 9 June 2026 describes the paved Vásárút farm road near the Church of St John the Baptist as a popular route among cyclists from the surrounding area. As local use and conditions may change, check the current conditions before cycling.

When looking for a holiday rental, your preferred focus can help guide your choice: the archaeological landscape and museum objects, church history in Păuleni-Ciuc and Delnița, or a Via Mariae stage with specific route details. If you also wish to visit the exhibition in Sfântu Gheorghe, plan this museum visit separately and check the current arrangements. This helps keep the trip’s different themes distinct, without combining them into a single route or itinerary.
