A trip to Călugăreni can focus on two themes: the history of the memorial sites and the wider river and forest landscape. When choosing a place to stay, you can decide whether monuments and architectural history or the landscape context matter more to you.
Memorial sites in Călugăreni
The bridge over the Neajlov in Călugăreni was rebuilt in 1934–1935 to commemorate the victory over the Turks. The Crucea lui Mihai marks a different point in time: it was erected in 1993 to mark the 400th anniversary of Mihai Viteazul’s accession to the throne of Wallachia. Thus, two forms of remembrance stand side by side: the rebuilding of a bridge to commemorate a victory and a monument marking a precisely specified anniversary. The bridge links the commemorative occasion to the Neajlov; the Crucea lui Mihai highlights a different historical aspect. The rebuilding took place before the monument was erected.
Churches and historic buildings
The Biserica Adormirii Maicii Domnului is one of Călugăreni’s historic monuments and is dated to 1866. The former school building dates from the 19th century and now serves as a museum. Here, the building’s former use as a school meets its present-day function as a museum. The Conacul Varthiadi can also be placed in time: it is dated to the 20th century. Another trace of the past is the cemetery with stone crosses in the churchyard of the wooden church, dated from the 18th to the 19th century. The different dates provide a timeline spanning the 18th to the 20th century; the museum function adds a change in use to the architectural history.
River landscape, forest and getting there
Călugăreni commune lies where the Câlniștea flows into the Neajlov. The river landscape is therefore also an important point of reference, alongside the individual buildings and memorial sites. The Comana–Călugăreni forest zone offers opportunities for tourism, recreation and leisure, broadening the perspective on the landscape. This is a different approach from a stay focused exclusively on history: you can decide whether the river landscape and forest zone should shape your travel plans. National road DN5 runs through the commune and connects Giurgiu with Bucharest. This road connection helps place Călugăreni in its regional context.
Choose accommodation based on the purpose of your trip
When looking for a holiday rental in Călugăreni, you can first consider whether local history or the landscape context will be the main factor in your stay. For a museum-focused visit, ask in advance about visiting opportunities at the former school building. Călugăreni also has a weekly market. If you want to plan your visit around it, check the market day in advance.
