Casa lui Secan lies 500 metres northeast of Șendreni on a raised terrace at Balta Mălina. The site combines a specific geographical location with a multi-layered archaeological classification. Other sites, the Lower Siret floodplain as a protected area, and a monastery near Șendreni add to the picture.

Archaeological sites and their periods

The archaeological site of Șendreni includes settlement remains from the Roman period as well as from the Migration Period of the 10th and 11th centuries. Casa lui Secan has settlement remains from the Hallstatt period, the Roman period and the Early Middle Ages of the Dridu culture. At Situl nr. 3, the remains date from the Hallstatt, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The Hallstatt and Roman periods are common to the latter two sites. The Hellenistic phase distinguishes Situl nr. 3; the Dridu culture is associated with the Early Middle Ages at Casa lui Secan. The settlement remains from the 10th and 11th centuries, in turn, relate to the archaeological site of Șendreni. This comparison assigns the dates to their respective sites rather than presenting them as a single continuous chronology.

The Siret, Balta Mălina and the floodplain

Balta Mălina is a shared geographical reference point: Casa lui Secan lies on the raised terrace, while Situl nr. 3 is at the southeastern edge of the village, in the area of the former SMT, on the shore of the same lake. The archaeological site of Șendreni, by contrast, lies beside the sawmill factory on the left bank of the Siret. Thus, the two sites at Balta Mălina contrast a raised position with a shoreline location, while the Siret defines the location of the third archaeological site.

The Lower Siret floodplain, Lunca Siretului Inferior, stretches from Mărășești to the village of Șendreni. It is a Natura 2000 site of community importance and also a special protection area for birds. This is a different geographical scale from the individual locations of Casa lui Secan and Situl nr. 3: the floodplain refers to a larger landscape, while the sites mark specific locations on Balta Mălina and the Siret. Those interested in landscape and nature conservation can therefore consider the floodplain as a separate theme alongside archaeology.

Monastery history and church

Near Șendreni, the monastery „Sfântul Mucenic Trifon“ was founded in 2001 on land transferred to the Church after the return of former Church property; it was intended as a place of prayer, piety and spiritual fervour for salvation. In Șendreni itself, the Biserica Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril church is located on Strada Bisericii. The foundation history of the nearby monastery and the specific address of the church thus represent different religious points of interest.

If you are looking for a hotel in Șendreni, a thematic shortlist can help: are you most interested in the archaeological periods, the Siret floodplain or the monastery’s history? This can help you choose the theme that will shape your trip before selecting accommodation.
