Afumați combines a setting on the plain in southern Romania with a local history reflected in churches, manor houses and rural traditions. It is also crossed by two streams and has a connection to the Danube. Historic buildings and the landscape offer different points of interest when planning your stay.

Landscape and Location

The commune lies on the plain in southern Romania, about 20 kilometres from the Danube. The Baboia and Balasan streams cross Afumați. Together, the plain, waterways and distance from the Danube give a clear sense of the destination’s location. You can consider these landscape features alongside the commune’s buildings and history.

Historical Milestones and Buildings

The commune’s first documented mentions are said to date from 1618. From 1941 to 1943, Afumați was called Amzulești. These milestones belong to different chapters of local history: an early documented mention and a later period under a different name.

The Orthodox Church of Izvorul Tămăduirii was founded between 1861 and 1863 and consecrated in 1941. The Afumați Heroes’ Monument stands in the churchyard. It consists of a stepped base, an obelisk and an eagle with half-open wings. The church and monument offer different historical perspectives: religious architectural history and commemorative culture.

The manor houses Conac Dinopol, Conac Vorvoreanu and Conac Seulescu form another historical sequence. Dinopol was built in 1902, Vorvoreanu in 1904 and Seulescu in 1908. Two years separate the first two construction dates, and four years separate Vorvoreanu and Seulescu. Conac Vorvoreanu now serves as the town hall. The construction dates and a specific present-day use thus provide different points of reference for local history.

Rural Culture and Traditions

The Museum of Rural Culture and Civilisation in Afumați was founded in 2009. According to historical accounts, local residents made charcoal in summer and transported or sold it elsewhere in winter. This seasonal cycle brings a former local practice to life: production in summer was followed by transport and sales in winter.

Textiles are also part of the cultural heritage. An exhibition of Oltenian carpets was held at a cultural and food event in Afumați in 2018. Some of the carpets on display had been kept in local households. The exhibition thus connects regional textile culture with objects from local homes.

On 28 August 2026, the commune held the tenth edition of its Community Day. In 2026, “Ropotinul Țestelor” was also held in Afumați as a competition featuring folk dances and artistic performances. These specific event dates add more recent cultural themes to the older building and local-history records.
