The trail to Vârful Pilişca and the traditional customs of Mărcuș and Valea Dobârlăului offer different ways to discover Dobârlău Commune: here, a striking mountain landscape and local history sit side by side. You can shape your trip around your interests in nature, hiking or culture.

Landscape at the meeting point of two microregions

Dobârlău Commune lies at the junction of the geographical microregions of Țara Bârsei and Munții Întorsurii. It is also described as being in the southeast of Țara Bârsei and surrounded by the Clăbucetele Întorsurii. These details place the commune both within its region and in its mountain landscape. Forests and pastures shape the vegetation in the commune.

Typical mountain-forest wildlife in the region includes red deer, bears, lynxes, foxes, wolves, wild boar and falcons. The waterways can also be placed geographically: Pârâul Finișoara is a tributary of the Râul Tărlung. Together, these landscape features show how forests, pastures, mountains and water contribute to the character of the area.

Hiking trail to Vârful Pilişca

The hiking trail marked PA connects Dobârlău with Vârful Pilişca. The peak is 1,222 metres high and is the highest point in the Munții Întorsurii. From the trail, there are views of Valea Dobârlăului and the ridge between Dobârlău and Teliu. The route therefore combines a clearly identified peak destination with two specific views of the landscape.

If you plan to hike the trail, check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change. Along the way, Valea Dobârlăului and the ridge between Dobârlău and Teliu are also named reference points for navigation, in addition to the peak.

History and traditional ways of life

Mărcuș has been documented in written records since 1505. Mărcuș Monastery is dedicated to “Sfinții Români” and “Acoperământul Maicii Domnului.” One origin story traces the name Dobârlău to the shepherd Dobre, who is said to have settled there around 1500 as one of the first inhabitants. The story about the name’s origin and the documentary evidence for Mărcuș are different historical reference points.

The traditional customs of Valea Dobârlăului include Christmas carols and New Year celebrations. The former shepherding practices are also part of the local history of Mărcuș and Lunca Mărcușului: sheep were gathered around the Easter holidays and tended until December 1 or until the first snowfall. As part of the pastoral tradition in Mărcuș, each milking sheep was allotted six kilograms of Brânză de burduf and one kilogram of Urdă. Festive occasions and the grazing year thus represent two different aspects of traditional ways of life.

Another archaeological trace is the site called “Cetatea lui Barabas”: an earthen rampart stands beside a stream.
