Cultural Heritage between Callatis and Mangalia
The Esmahan Sultan Mosque in Mangalia was built in 1575 and is considered Romania’s oldest Muslim place of worship. It is a monument of Oriental architecture. A Muslim cemetery with gravestones that are 300 years old lies around the mosque. The architecture and cemetery are therefore specific historical features of this site.
The Callatis Mangalia Archaeology Museum offers a permanent exhibition, archaeological monuments in the Mangalia Municipality area, and numerous cultural and academic activities at the museum. The exhibition includes monuments preserved in situ and approximately 4,000 objects. Its scope spans from the Neolithic period through the Greek and Roman periods to the Late Roman-Byzantine era. The Callatis Archaeological Museum also preserves the mosaic of a Hellenistic room and the grave goods from the Papyrus Tomb.
The Papyrus Tomb is a funerary archaeological find in Mangalia from the La Tène period; it is dated to the 4th to 1st centuries BC. The tomb was reconstructed between 1959 and 1961 and subsequently became part of a museum tour. Callatis also has a long history of foundation: according to ancient literary sources, the city was founded at the end of the 6th century BC by Doric colonists from Heraclea Pontica. The various dates place the finds within a long sequence of periods.
Neptun Beach: Location and Features
Neptun Beach is a strip of sand between the Black Sea and the two Neptun lakes. Neptun’s main beach is known as “La Steaguri.” Neptun’s main beach continues south into Jupiter Beach; it is separated from Olimp Beach by an area owned by the Romanian government.
Neptun Beach is an average of 30 to 100 meters wide, with fine sand and a gently sloping sandy seabed. Beach conditions and facilities at Neptun Beach are seasonal; beach facilities and seasonal offerings may change.
Cap Aurora and Getting There
Cap Aurora’s visitor facilities include a natural beach, a waterfront promenade with views, green spaces, and children’s playgrounds. Seasonal visitor facilities may also change here. Cap Aurora is accessible by road. Minibuses run from Mangalia railway station to Cap Aurora and Jupiter. Check routes and schedules again before you travel.
Natural Environment and Horse Breeding
The habitat 1110-1, “Fine sands with Zostera noltii meadows,” continues to exist in the area of Mangalia’s sulfide-rich underwater springs. In Romania, this habitat occurs only at this location. This is a notable natural-environment fact alongside the beaches and cultural sites described above.
An Agerpres report published in April 2024 describes the Mangalia Stud Farm as a leisure and tourism center with a trotting and galloping racetrack, and mentions more than 200 purebred Arabians.
