Constanța brings together an Art Nouveau building on the pedestrian promenade and an aquarium directly opposite by the sea. It also offers maritime collections, a center dedicated to the nature of Dobruja, and the opportunity to take a boat out onto the Black Sea from Portul Turistic Tomis. The city’s heritage, wildlife and a trip on the water offer different perspectives on the place.

Art Nouveau and an Aquarium by the Sea

Cazinoul Constanța is an Art Nouveau building on the pedestrian promenade; it was inaugurated in 1910. Its terrace was once a meeting place for sailors from around the world, tourists and the social elite of the time. Alongside its architecture, this former role gives the building a connection to social history.

Acvariul Constanța is directly opposite the Cazinoul, by the sea. It presents a permanent exhibition on aquatic flora and fauna. Over time, more than 100 fish and marine animal species from various geographic regions have been brought together there. This means the focus is not only on individual species, but also on a diverse aquatic collection. The Cazinoul and the aquarium represent two different interests facing each other in the same immediate location: architectural history on one side and the underwater world on the other.

Architecture and Maritime History

Carol I Mosque also offers a distinctive architectural connection: it is regarded as Romania’s first building to feature reinforced-concrete elements. For those interested in architectural history, it offers another perspective on the city’s architecture alongside the Art Nouveau style of the Cazinoul.

Muzeul Marinei houses 37,800 exhibits in 33 collections. Delfinarium Constanţa tells a different kind of maritime story: it began operating on June 1, 1972, and was then the first museum institution of its kind in Romania and southeastern Europe. It also housed all three dolphin subspecies living in the Black Sea. Its founding history and connection to Black Sea fauna give the dolphinarium a historical focus distinct from the collections at Muzeul Marinei.

Wildlife of Dobruja

Microrezervație și Păsări Exotice was created to give visitors as comprehensive a picture as possible of the nature of Dobruja. Water birds include pelicans, swans, wild ducks and wild geese; peacocks and pheasants are among the land birds. There are also mammals such as mouflons, fallow deer and roe deer. The range extends from birds on and around the water to land birds and various mammals.

By comparison, Acvariul Constanța focuses on aquatic flora and fauna. If you want to consider different aspects of nature, you can weigh these focuses against one another: the aquarium and the Microrezervație offer different emphases, while the dolphinarium adds another dimension through its history and connection to Black Sea dolphins.

A Trip Out onto the Black Sea

Visitors can board a boat at Portul Turistic Tomis for a trip out onto the Black Sea. This differs from the exhibitions and collections: here, the focus is on a journey on the water. Together with architecture, maritime history and wildlife, this offers a range of different interests rather than a single prescribed focus for a visit.

Hotels and Ways to Shape Your Stay

If you are looking for hotels in Constanţa, your trip’s main focus can be a good starting point for choosing where to stay. Would you like to experience Art Nouveau and architectural history above all, are you more interested in maritime collections, or is wildlife your priority? A boat trip out onto the Black Sea offers another distinct focus. These questions can help you plan your stay around your own interests without imposing a set order on the different experiences.
