In Tisău Commune, wooded valleys and ridges meet monastic history, local culture and motocross enduro. When planning your trip, it is helpful to first decide which theme you want to shape your stay: historic monastery sites, the landscape around the Nișcov Valley, or motorsports. Poiana Hoților Peak offers a specific elevation reference: at 737 metres, it is the highest peak in the commune.
Landscape and orientation
Tisău Commune encompasses numerous wooded valleys; the Ciolanu ridge is also wooded. In the wider regional surroundings of the Nișcov Valley, wooded hills, meadows and vineyards add to the landscape. There are also limestone slopes with shell rock, shaped by the waters of the Nișcov and its tributaries. The commune’s woodland landscape and the more varied landscapes of the wider valley surroundings thus provide distinct points of reference.
One specific place in the commune is the Poiana Pinului recreation centre: it is located in Haleș, at the foot of Ciolanu Hill. The centre’s facilities include, among other things, a sports field. Poiana Pinului is accessible by public transport via the DN10 and DJ100H.
Roads and getting there
The main access road to Tisău is county road DJ100H. Heading east, it connects Tisău with Vernești and ends there at the DN10. The main route through the Nișcov Valley also follows the DJ100H through Tisău. For orientation, this provides both a local access route and a connection to the route through the valley.
DJ203G provides a different road connection: it runs north from Haleș and Izvoru towards Ciolanu Monastery and partly shares the same route as the DJ100H there. When planning your journey, these named roads and places can help you distinguish between the different connections: the eastern link via Vernești, the valley route and the route towards the monastery. Izvoru and Izvoranu refer to different places.
Monastic history and local culture
Barbu Monastery is located in the village of Leiculești. Captain Barbu Bădeanu founded it between 1664 and 1669. The monastery includes a church classified as a historic monument and dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. The former Bradu Monastery complex is located in Haleș. Its components include an enclosing wall, ruined outbuildings and a church.
The chronology of these two monastery sites differs: the first documented mention of Bradu is recorded as 15 January 1600, while the period from 1664 to 1669 refers to Barbu’s foundation. These are two different historical points of reference that are important when comparing the sites. The cultural heritage is complemented by the Tisău Cultural Centre in the village of Valea Sălciilor. It preserves and carries forward the memory of rural life in Buzău County. Alongside monastic history, the commune thus offers a connection to the region’s rural culture.
