Balta Albă can be explored through its spa history, literary connections, church architecture and lakeside landscape. These themes span different periods: the spa tradition dates back to the 19th century, while the natural history information identifies specific seasonal highlights.

Spa town and literary connections

Balta Albă was established as a spa town in 1838 and had been known as a spa resort since the mid-19th century. Treatments using sapropelic mud from Lake Balta Albă date back at least to 1840. The early use of mud is therefore part of the town’s historic spa tradition.

Balta Albă is also connected to the 19th century through literature: Vasile Alecsandri first visited the town in 1846 and returned in 1847. Alexandru Odobescu later devoted vivid passages to Balta Albă in his work “Pseudokineghetikos,” also known as “Fals tratat de vânătoare,” published in 1874. Alecsandri’s visits in the 1840s thus sit alongside a later literary portrayal.

Lake and nature reserve

Lake Balta Albă lies in the Râmnic Plain, immediately south of the road between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila. Earlier scientific observations describe it as brackish, shallow, dimictic and eutrophic. It also contains pelogenic therapeutic mud rich in organic matter. Information about its physical characteristics is based on historical observations; such conditions can change.

The Balta Albă nature reserve is a geological and zoological protected area covering 1,167 hectares. It lies on the eastern edge of Buzău County and the northwestern edge of Brăila County.

For the ROSPA0004 Balta Albă-Amara-Jirlău area, the 2023–2024 information report from the ANANP Buzău Territorial Office describes an important feeding and resting area for red-breasted geese (Branta ruficollis) during the winter bird migration. For breeding populations, the report lists the Eurasian bittern (Botaurus stellaris), purple heron (Ardea purpurea) and ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca). The seasonal distinction is clear: red-breasted geese are associated with winter migration, while the other three species are associated with breeding populations.

Church and archaeological traces

The parish church in Balta Albă has a trefoil-shaped floor plan with two side apses and an octagonal tower. The iconostasis, an icon screen, was made in the workshops of Plumbuita Monastery and installed on August 18, 1990. The floor plan, side apses and tower give the church a clearly defined architectural profile; the iconostasis’s origin and installation date add a precisely dated historical detail.

An archaeological site lies 3.1 km west of the village on the elevated lakeside terrace. It comprises a settlement and a necropolis from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. This adds a much older layer to the more recent spa and cultural history; the stated location places the site precisely west of the village.
