When looking for a hotel in Vama Buzăului, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. The named tourist trail starts in the village; the Valea Zimbrilor reserve, sculpture exhibition and historic buildings are all within the commune. The hiking route, wildlife and cultural history are therefore also distinct in terms of location.
Hiking Route and Landscape
The Vama Buzăului–Poiana Dălghiu–Poiana Teslei route is one of three officially approved tourist trails. It starts in Vama Buzăului and passes through Poiana Dălghiu on its way to Poiana Teslei. This makes the starting point and route clear for planning a hike. Trail conditions and markings can change, so check them before setting out. The commune of Vama Buzăului is bordered to the southwest by the mountain range of the Ciucaș Massif.
Valea Zimbrilor Reserve
The Valea Zimbrilor Reserve was inaugurated in November 2008. A description dated March 12, 2026, lists bison, reindeer, mouflons, red deer, fallow deer, peacocks and geese; the animal population may change. On the same date, admission prices were listed as 20 lei for children and 30 lei for adults; advance booking was not required at that time. Check before traveling whether the prices and visiting conditions are still valid. The reserve offers a different focus from the hiking route: here, the opportunity to see animals takes center stage.
Art and Border History
The sculpture exhibition in the commune features works by local artists made from wood or metal. Their sculptures remain on display in the village throughout the year. This year-round exhibition differs in timing from the folk music festival “Vama de la Munte,” which was held in Vama Buzăului during warmer weather.
The commune is also home to the ruins of an 18th-century Catholic chapel. The chapel served as a place of worship for Catholic customs officials and Habsburg border guards. A former border guard post building in the commune was also built in the 18th century. Together, these buildings represent two aspects of border history: worship for members of the border service and a border guard post.
Regional Cuisine
A description dated March 12, 2026, mentions dining spots in the commune where traditional dishes were prepared exclusively from products sourced from local households. A description dated January 29, 2025, lists brânză de burduf and cașcaval as products visitors could buy at dining spots to take home. Availability depends on the individual producer; ask in advance about the current selection and menu at each place.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
