Visitors choosing Racoș as a destination can focus on geology, nature observation, or archaeological history. The basalt columns and the lake in a former basalt quarry are particularly striking; there are also designated protected areas and named archaeological sites. When planning, consider which of these themes you want to focus on. This makes it easier to decide how you would like to spend your time there.

Geology and Natural Monuments

The Racoș Geological Complex is a geological protected area of national importance and covers 95.2 hectares. Since 2007, it has been part of the Dealurile Homoroadelor Natura 2000 site. Its size and its designated protected-area status provide a clear framework for the geological landscape. It is also helpful when planning a trip to consider the different scales involved: Carhaga is a 1.6-hectare paleontological reserve and is designated a natural monument. It lies within the administrative area of Comuna Racoș.

The Racoș Basalt Columns consist of prismatic columns up to 18 metres high. They are also designated a natural monument. Another geological landmark is the lake in the former basalt quarry. It formed from melting snow and accumulated rainwater after basalt extraction ceased. It is 100 metres long and at least 10 metres deep.

The Hegheș basalt scoria quarry is also known as the Racoș Volcano. Hegheș Peak is 60 metres high and offers a viewpoint over the surrounding landscape. Together with the columns and the lake, these named geological features offer different points of interest if you are interested in the landscape and how it formed.

Protected Areas and Birdlife

The Cotul Turnuzului botanical and ornithological reserve lies within the administrative areas of the communes of Racoș and Hoghiz. Numerous bird species breed there along the Transylvanian route of the European bird migration. This adds a different nature focus to the geological protected areas. If you want to explore nature beyond rock formations, bird nesting and the area’s place on a migration route are the main themes here.

Archaeology and Culture

The historical references also vary. Dealul Vărăriei is a fortification dating from the Early Iron Age and the Dacian period. Mihályvára is considered a refuge fortress because of its secluded location in a side valley and its clear view of the Olt Gorge; previous research expresses reservations about this interpretation. This cautious assessment is part of the site’s history and should not be mistaken for certainty.

The Piatra Detunată archaeological site lies halfway between Augustin and Racoșul de Jos, on the left bank of the Olt. Its location can therefore be described in relation to these two named places. The “Ziua Pietrei” festival is another cultural activity: it takes place every summer as a cultural event in Racoș. Check the exact event dates before your trip if you would like to plan your visit around it.

Getting There

Racoș can be reached from the DN13/E60 via the DJ 131C, a distance of 10 kilometres. This road connection provides a concrete starting point for planning your journey. Also decide whether geological protected areas, birdlife, or cultural sites should shape your stay; this will help you plan your trip around the themes you actually want to explore.
