Prejmer combines a UNESCO World Heritage site with preserved settlement structures, a protected natural area and a range of activities. The fortified church and the village’s appearance tell different aspects of the place’s story: from its fortifications and historic buildings to details of everyday life. When planning your trip, this offers a clear choice between culture, nature, events and motorsports.

Fortified Church and Cultural Heritage

The architectural ensemble Cetatea Ţărănească Prejmer and the Evangelical Church of Prejmer are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The fortress wall is 480 metres long and 12 metres high. The complex includes 272 storage and refuge rooms on four levels. These figures give a sense of both the scale of the fortifications and their internal layout.

The fortified ensemble also includes a rampart walkway with loopholes and channels for pouring boiling water. These defensive features add the specific function of individual components to the picture of the high wall. The fortress houses an ethnographic museum that presents various aspects of life in the Saxon communities. In this way, fortifications, shelters and community life stand alongside one another as distinct themes.

Churches, Houses and Historic Streets

Another architectural landmark is the Orthodox Church „Sfinţii Apostoli Petru şi Pavel”. It was built in 1769 and features Baroque elements. The Şcoala Germană in Prejmer dates from the 19th century and is listed as a local historic and architectural monument. These two buildings add further structures with their own historical periods and stylistic features to the story of the fortified church.

The historic settlement also includes houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, listed as UNESCO cultural heritage. The addresses given are Str. Mare Nr. 2 and 57, Str. Pompierilor Nr. 13, Str. Cenuşii Nr. 105, Str. Braşovului Nr. 56 and 57, and Str. Pajiştei Nr. 1043. Historic plots and continuous street frontages have also been preserved; the narrow ends of the houses usually face the street.

Smaller infrastructure features also form part of the village’s character. An old canal system has been preserved in Broaştei and Morii streets. Washing and rinsing areas can be found on Izvoarelor Street and at the extension of Cetăţii Street. These details shift the focus from individual monuments to the structure of the historic settlement.

Nature and Sporting Activities

Pădurile şi mlaştinile eutrofe de la Prejmer adds a distinct natural element. The protected Natura 2000 site covers 356 hectares, of which 242 hectares lie within the municipality of Prejmer. These figures distinguish the total protected area from the portion within the municipality.

Another activity is offered by the Prejmer Raceway karting track. It is 1,250 metres long, 8 to 10 metres wide and has 15 turns. The track is designed for amateur and professional drivers and offers fast straights as well as challenging turns; the operator cites high safety standards. Before driving, check the current track information and procedures, as operating arrangements may change.

Prejmer also has connections to equestrian sports: Federația Ecvestră Română lists ACSE 163 PLOPI in connection with show jumping competitions. The federation lists Clubul de Echitatie 163 Plopi in connection with Working Equitation. The two listings relate to different types of competition.

Events and Getting There

The Diletto Musicale festival features organ concerts in the Prejmer fortress in August. Check that year’s programme if you would like to plan your trip around a concert. The Shrovetide festival is held in the municipality of Prejmer before the start of the Easter fasting period; its date varies with the Easter calendar. During the festival, two young men dressed as cooks prepare pancakes on a cart fitted with a hotplate. The programme may vary from year to year.

For bus travel, one dated piece of information is relevant: an announcement about the launch on 8 September 2025 described RATBV route 520 from Gara Brașov Terminal via Parc Industrial Prejmer and the streets Str. Braşovului, Str. Mare, Str. Pictor Iacob Brujan and Str. Principală to Lunca Câlnicului in Prejmer. Before travelling, check whether the route and departure times are still valid. This makes the historical route description a point of reference, not a guarantee of a current timetable.
