Codlea can be explored through two distinct highlights: trails in the Măgura Codlei area and the city’s architectural history. There is also the Ștrandul din Codlea with its lakes, as well as the Crown Festival in June. Depending on your travel interests, you can focus on nature, cultural history or an event date.
Hiking trails in the Măgura Codlei area
There are six hiking trails in the Măgura Codlei area, homologated in 2021. They lead to the summit of Vârful Măgura Codlei, the ruins of Cetatea Neagră and Ștrandul Codlea with its two associated lakes. The Zona Maial–Poiana Mărul Dulce–Cetatea Neagră trail is an easy hiking route. It runs entirely through the forest and mostly along a forest road; there are no exposed sections on this route. The summit of Vârful Măgura Codlei is at 1,292 m. Trail conditions may vary seasonally, and markings may change. Check conditions before setting out on a hike.
The natural environment is also significant: part of the administrative area of the city of Codlea belongs to the European Natura 2000 ecological network.
Evangelical Church and fortified church
The Evangelical Church of Codlea was built in the second half of the 13th century. In 1432, a fortified church was built around it. The church’s ceiling dates from 1702; it also has an organ with 2,000 pipes. This chronology links the medieval church building with the later fortification and a dated feature of its interior. The ceiling and organ offer further specific points of reference for exploring the building’s history.
The Evangelical Church can only be visited by prior telephone or email request. Arrange your visit in advance.
Cultural center and Biblioteca Codlea
The cultural center of the city of Codlea was built between 1881 and 1925. Its neoclassical style features Baroque influences and elements of Saxon architecture. Biblioteca Codlea was established in 1908. The building initially served both as a district court and as a post and telegraph office with a telephone exchange at the time. Its architecture combines Baroque and neoclassical elements. The two buildings offer different ways to explore the town’s history: for the cultural center, the construction period and architectural influences are foremost; for the library, its former administrative and communications functions also come into play.
Ștrandul din Codlea and the Crown Festival
Ștrandul din Codlea was established in 1904 through the efforts of the Codlea Beautification Association. Its pool is fed by a spring of the Goldbach, the Pârâul de Aur; the spring water remains at a temperature of 18 °C year-round. The area also includes two lakes covering 7 ha. They are rich in fish and are used for recreation and leisure.
The traditional Crown Festival is held every June in Zona Maial. The festival includes performances and traditional customs; dates and programme may vary. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the dates and programme for the relevant year. Alongside its hiking destinations and historic buildings, Codlea therefore offers a seasonal event to consider when planning your trip.
