The 3.50-metre-high column-shaped war memorial and several churches with different names give Oarja a tangible cultural identity. Road connections and the absence of rail links are also relevant when planning your stay. The local memorial sites and travel arrangements can thus be considered as two distinct aspects of trip planning.
Getting There and Understanding the Location
Oarja is about 16 km from Pitești via a bypass route. The Bucharest–Pitești motorway runs for approximately 6 km through the northern outskirts of the commune. By contrast, the Pitești–Ștefănești county road passes through the southeastern part of Oarja. The local DC 111 Oarja–Bradu road begins at the DJ 659 and ends in the commune. These three details describe different road connections: a motorway on the northern outskirts, a county road in the southeast, and the DC 111 connection with the DJ 659 and Oarja. The commune has no railway connections. When planning your journey, both the approximate road distance to Pitești and the specific road connections within the commune are therefore relevant.
Churches in Oarja and Ceaușești
The “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” church in Oarja is a historic monument. Also located in Oarja is the “Duminica Tuturor Sfinților” church of the Oarja parish; it is Orthodox. Another church is located elsewhere: the wooden church in Belegani is in the village of Ceaușești, in the commune of Oarja in Argeș County. Its older dedications are “Sfinții Voievozi” and “Cuvioasa Paraschiva.”
The names and location details are useful for finding your way around. Two of the churches are associated with Oarja; for the wooden church, Ceaușești provides the more precise location. The churches also differ in their characteristics: one is identified as a historic monument, another as Orthodox, and the wooden church by its older dedications. This helps you distinguish the three references by location and church name, rather than grouping them under a single name.
The Column-Shaped War Memorial
The Oarja war memorial is designed as a column and stands 3.50 metres high. It consists of a tiered prismatic base, a square shaft, a capital and a sphere mounted on top. This description distinguishes the column’s individual parts, from the tiered base to the shaft and the uppermost element. The main inscription commemorates the heroes who fell in the 1916–1918 war. It also records that residents of Oarja and other donors erected the memorial. Its form and inscription offer two different insights: the components describe the memorial itself, while the inscription links remembrance with the contribution made to its construction.
Balta “Oarja” as a Fishing Pond
As of 22 May 2007, Balta “Oarja” in Oarja was listed as a fishing pond with a daily fee of 30 lei. The fish species listed are perch, crucian carp, common carp and rudd. This date applies to that earlier listing; it should not be mistaken for a current price or access requirement. Check the current access and fishing conditions, as well as the price, before travelling.
