A stone cross dating from 1662 marks the site in Godeni where the Biserica Băneasa once stood. Together with Fântâna Comanei and the Bughea River, these historical and landscape landmarks give the commune a distinct character. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether local history, the river landscape or getting your bearings across the commune as a whole should be the focus of your stay.

The Stone Cross and the Biserica Băneasa

The 1662 stone cross is classified as a national memorial or funerary monument. It is also known by the names “Crucea jupanului Nica” and “Crucea cea înaltă de la poarta bisericii.” The Biserica Băneasa was the church of the Golescu manor and a wooden building founded around 1650. The cross marks the site where the church once stood. Two distinct periods of time therefore come together here: the church was founded around 1650, while the stone cross dates from 1662. This connection makes the former church site an important landmark in the history of the area.

Fântâna Comanei

Fântâna Comanei is considered a natural monument and has been historically documented since 1720. According to local tradition, there was once an observation point at this site. A historical record and a local legend thus coexist: the spring has been documented since 1720, while the former observation point is part of local tradition.

The Bughea and the landscape

The Bughea crosses the commune from north to south. Near the northern part of Godeni, it forms the narrow, 300-metre-long section known as “La Chei.” The gorges north of Godeni village are considered particularly picturesque. Within the commune, elevations range from about 450 metres in the Bughea valley to about 800 metres in the northwest. Two different scales should be distinguished when choosing a landscape: “La Chei” refers to a single stretch, whereas the elevation figures apply to the commune as a whole.

Churches in the commune

Historic buildings can also be found elsewhere in the commune, beyond Godeni village. In Capu Piscului stands the Biserica “Sfântul Nicolae,” a local architectural monument dating from 1911. In Cotești is the Biserica “Nașterea Maicii Domnului,” also a local architectural monument, dating from 1880. Both places are in the commune, but not in Godeni village itself. The dates point to different building periods within the same commune.

Getting your bearings during your stay

The DN73C national road crosses Godeni commune and connects Câmpulung with Curtea de Argeș. It provides a regional point of reference, while the stone cross, the spring and the river are specific local landmarks. When planning your trip, you can take these different scales into account: the road connection for regional orientation, and the cultural and landscape themes to shape your stay.
