Ciocănăi has a clear cultural landmark in the parish church of Saint Nicholas and the Dormition of the Mother of God. It stands in the Teleorman River valley, at the entrance to Ciocănăi. It is listed as cultural heritage under monument code AG-II-m-A-13595. Its construction period, wall paintings and inscription offer concrete points of reference for understanding the site’s cultural significance.

Construction History and a Notable Wall Painting

The parish church was built between 1837 and 1840. In 1863, an exterior wall painting depicting a demonic figure was added to its south wall. The popular nickname Biserica cu Moartea refers to this image. The construction period and the date of the wall painting therefore mark different phases in the church’s history.

Frescoes in Different Locations

Above the entrance on the east wall, beneath a small projecting canopy, is an exterior fresco depicting the Dormition of the Mother of God. A votive fresco of the founders is located on the west wall of the pronaos. The south-wall painting and the fresco above the eastern entrance are on the exterior; the founders’ painting is in the pronaos. The pronaos, or church vestibule, sets it apart spatially from the two exterior frescoes. The three works thus differ both in subject and in location. This makes it possible to understand the church’s layout, from its position at the entrance to the village to the locations of the paintings on the building.

Inscription and the Founders’ Clothing

The inscription adds a distinctive feature of its own: it is written in a transitional alphabet combining Latin and Cyrillic characters. The votive fresco offers a different cultural-historical perspective: the founders’ clothing recalls general styles of 18th-century Phanariot dress, including anteria, giubele and garments with “naturele.” The dates refer to separate things: 1837 to 1840 is the construction period, 1863 is when the south-wall painting was added, and the 18th century is the point of comparison for the clothing.

The Municipality’s Landscape Setting

At the municipal level, the view widens from the church to the landscape. The municipality of Moşoaia lies on the Cotmeana Plateau, at the eastern edge of this landscape. The plateau forms part of the land between the Argeş and Olt rivers and extends over more than 3,000 km². This area figure describes the plateau, not Ciocănăi. The scale shifts here from the specific location of the church to the wider regional landscape: its position at the village entrance locates the church within the village, while the plateau places the municipality in a broader geographical context.
