In Câmpeni, the historical trail leads from the events preceding the 1784 uprising to the Revolution of 1848–1849. At the same time, the town lies in a depression crossed by the Arieș, in the central Apuseni Mountains. These offer different focuses for planning your trip: historic sites, landscapes and a ride on the Mocănița Apusenilor. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to decide first which of these interests you want to shape your days.

Landscape and orientation in the Apuseni Mountains

The area around Câmpeni ranges from 550 metres at the mouth of the Arieș Valley into the Bistra Valley to 1,597 metres at the summit of Runcului. This means that a river valley and a significantly higher elevation both feature in the region’s landscape. These figures refer to the area around Câmpeni and help put the natural setting of your stay into perspective.

Museums and the history of the uprisings

The Muzeul „Avram Iancu“ is housed in the building that served Avram Iancu as the headquarters of the Auraria Gemina Legion during the Revolution of 1848–1849. The first hall presents the ancient and prehistoric history of the local region through exhibits and materials. The 1784 uprising is another historical focus: Câmpeni became its centre. In November of that year, Horea set up his headquarters there and, together with Cloșca, Crișan and other trusted associates, led the fight against the oppressive authorities.

The Muzeul „Beciul lui Horea“ recalls events leading up to the uprising, including the Câmpeni spring market on 24 May 1782. Its exhibits include the „POARTA“, dating from that period, seven display cases containing historical documents and objects, and a mural depicting Horea, Cloșca and Crișan. The chronology distinguishes these topics: the market belongs to the prehistory of the uprising, while Câmpeni’s role as its centre dates to 1784.

Churches, monastery and historic places of remembrance

The Biserica din Deal has been documented since 1550 and is believed to be considerably older. The cemetery behind it contains the graves of Avram Iancu’s followers: Preotul Iosiv Gomboș, Nicolae Corches and Mihail Andreica. The Biserica din Vale was built between 1906 and 1 March 1911 as a single-nave structure in the style of Transylvanian churches. Another memorial to Avram Iancu is his equestrian statue: it was brought from Târgu Mureș to Câmpeni in the autumn of 1940 and placed on a prepared stone plinth. His bust is in the courtyard of Colegiul Național „Avram Iancu“.

The Valea Bistrii Monastery is located in the Bistrii Valley in Câmpeni, in the Apuseni Mountains, and is dedicated to the Holy Hierarchs Ilie Iorest and Sava Brancovici. It was initially a hermitage for nuns; on 28 September 2012, with the approval of the Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolis of Transylvania, it was elevated to a monastery. To get there, take the DN 75 from Câmpeni towards Bistra. From there, turn left onto the DC 141; after about 200 metres, a sign points to the entrance to Valea Bistrii Monastery. As road conditions can change, check the route before your visit.

Cultural routes and a ride on the Mocănița

The Alba Regalis cultural route passes through Câmpeni and includes the Podul „Regele Ferdinand“. The Ruta Unității Naționale also passes through Câmpeni; it is part of a cultural route about 150 kilometres long through Alba County. Alba Regalis identifies a specific structure in Câmpeni, while the reference to the Ruta Unității Naționale describes the wider regional context.

The Mocănița Apusenilor, a historic tourist train offering scenic rides and insights into local traditions, provides another perspective on the Apuseni Mountains. The train runs from Câmpeni station to Cărpiniș near Abrud; the round trip takes about two hours. This makes the ride easy to plan as a separate activity. Confirm departure times before your trip, as they may vary.

A national centre for tourist information and promotion is located on Strada Gării. Check the current contact details before planning a visit.
