Guayama brings together cultural sites in the town center and a natural area in the wider municipality. This distinction is helpful when planning your trip: would you like to focus mainly on history, architecture, and literature, or are you also interested in the mangrove forest and its opportunities for birdwatching and walking?

Collections, Architecture, and Literature

Museo Casa Cautiño is a historic house museum with original furnishings, paintings, and personal belongings. These collections offer a glimpse into life in the 19th century. Domestic interiors, artworks, and personal items together provide an entry point into history; the focus is not solely on individual dates or events.

Casa Museo Historia y Arte de Guayama is dedicated to men and women from Guayama who have contributed to Puerto Rico’s culture and history. Its subject complements the perspective offered by Casa Cautiño’s furnishings and personal belongings: here, the focus is on the contributions of people from the city and their connection to Puerto Rico’s history.

Iglesia Católica San Antonio de Padua also makes an architectural statement: it was built to resemble Notre-Dame in Paris and is located on Guayama’s main square. The comparison with the Parisian church makes its design a distinct cultural topic within the city.

Literature is another part of the cultural picture. Casa y Museo del Poeta Luis Palés Matos is a cultural center in the poet’s former home. Luis Palés Matos is described as the founder of Afro-Antillean poetry. A bust of him also stands at Plaza de Recreo Cristóbal Colón. His name thus appears at two different cultural sites in Guayama: in connection with his former home and as part of the Plaza.

Gardens and Remembrance at the Plaza

Plaza de Recreo Cristóbal Colón has 16 gardens with Laureles de la India trees. The trees were planted around 1895; their distinctive mushroom-shaped pruning follows a tradition dating back to 1944. Two different points in time thus come together here: the approximate planting date of the trees and the start of the tradition of their distinctive pruning. The number of gardens and their design give the Plaza a distinct horticultural character.

The Plaza also features three monuments honoring fallen soldiers from Guayama and a bust of Luis Palés Matos. Garden art and remembrance stand side by side here as distinct themes. Visitors to the Plaza encounter both a traditional form of planting and a tribute to people from Guayama, as well as a literary connection to Palés Matos.

Mangrove Forest in the Wider Municipality

Aguirre State Forest offers a different focus from the museums and cultural sites in the town center. In the wider municipality of Guayama, it has birdwatching spots and walking trails through the mangrove forest. For nature enthusiasts, these features complement the cultural attractions with a distinct perspective on the landscape. The clear distinction between the town center and the wider municipality helps visitors understand Guayama not only as a place of urban history, but also in terms of its surroundings.

Aguirre State Forest includes, among other facilities, boardwalks, camping areas, a floating dock, and a kayaking area. If you would like to include these facilities in your plans, check their current operating details before visiting.
