Dorado offers different ways to experience culture, landscapes and leisure. In the town center, a historic artists’ home and a mural near the public square take center stage; elsewhere in the municipality, you’ll also find a distinctive forest ecosystem, a nature area and recreational spots. When choosing a destination, you can therefore weigh whether local art history or nature and leisure activities interest you more.

Art and history in Dorado

In the municipality of Dorado, the Centro de las Artes Juan Boria honors declaimer Juan Boria, who was born in the municipality and was known as the “Faraón del Verso Negro.” The theater from which the Centro grew was inaugurated in 1984 after being restored. Hurricanes destroyed the Centro in the 1990s; the municipal administration rebuilt it and reopened it in 2008. After reopening, it was used as a venue for art, theater and film, as well as artistic, cultural and community events. Here, the tribute to an artist, a theater’s history and its use as an event venue come together.

The Museo y Escuela de Arte Marcos Juan Alegría is located in a historic residence dating from the 19th century in Dorado’s town center. The house is also known as Casa Marcos Juan Alegría or “La Casa Amarilla.” The museum honors the life and work of Marcos J. Alegría, considered the first professional painter born in Dorado. The site thus combines the history of a residence with a tribute to an artist; Juan Boria and Alegría represent different cultural focuses.

Art venues and local history

Another artistic feature is Alexis Díaz’s mural near Dorado’s public square. The Sala de Exposiciones del Plata–Salvador Rivera Cardona offers a different perspective on local history: it was established at a site where a bakery once stood, and a rustic residence was located near the property. The former uses of a place are therefore also part of the stories surrounding Dorado’s cultural institutions.

Nature and recreation in the municipality

The Bosque de Pterocarpus de Dorado is a natural ecosystem in the Municipio Dorado near the north coast. It is characterized by Pterocarpus officinalis, locally called palo de pollo. The Reserva Natural Ojo del Buey in Dorado covers approximately 39.4 acres and offers opportunities for hiking and landscape photography. The two natural areas have different focuses: the forest centers on its characteristic tree species, while Ojo del Buey is associated with hiking and landscape photography.

For recreation in the municipality, the Gran Parque Agroturístico, Ecológico y Recreativo El Dorado has pavilions, a footpath and a fishing area. Balneario Manuel «Nolo» Morales, also known as Playa Sardinera, is considered a place for recreation and a gathering spot for locals and visitors. The offerings differ in character: the park has specific facilities and areas, while the Balneario is considered a gathering place.
