Queirã offers two distinct points of interest for a stay: the PR8 Waterway, with traces of tungsten mining, a press carved into granite and watermills, and the Passadiços do Castro de Ribamá, which form part of a walking route about two kilometres long. When planning your stay, you can choose between a route with several historical points of interest and a walk connected to the Castro. When looking for a holiday apartment in Queirã, it helps to decide on the main focus of your trip first.

The PR8 Waterway: Mining, Press and Mills

The history of tungsten mining began with the Sega concession. It was established for mining in 1917 in favour of the New York-based Dias Mining Corporation. Operations continued under different concessionaires until the 1960s; the mine was abandoned in 1968. This makes it possible to trace the sequence from the establishment of the concession through its operation to its end.

The PR8 Waterway passes Mina da Sega on the Ribamá slope. This is where the clearest traces of mining activity along the PR8 Waterway can be found. The PR8 also includes Lagareta da Cruz da Ribeira, a press carved into a granite outcrop. The two sites offer different points of interest: the mine represents tungsten mining, while the Lagareta is a press whose shape was carved into the granite.

Following old paths along the Moinhos River, the PR8 leads to several watermills where local people processed grain into flour. The route ends at the parish church of Queirã. Alongside the traces of mining, the waterway route therefore also highlights the former processing of grain and has a clearly identified endpoint.

Walking route and heritage at Castro de Ribamá

The Passadiços do Castro de Ribamá offer a different focus. They form part of a walking route about two kilometres long. Castro de Ribamá is considered one of the oldest signs of human presence in this area. The Passadiços were made accessible to visitors, researchers, families and future generations. Compared with the PR8, the focus here is on the connection to the Castro and the approximate length of the walking route, while the PR8 brings together several different points of interest along its route.

A culinary event with specific dates

The Feira da Vitela de Lafões also gives Queirã a culinary connection. It took place from 13 to 15 June 2025 in Giesteira, in the parish of Queirã. As a gastronomic event, it was dedicated to a product of significance to the region; the 24th edition was announced for 2025. These dates refer to that edition. If you would like to plan a trip around a future edition, check its dates in advance.

Choose the focus of your stay

For your planning, you can distinguish between three reasons to visit: the PR8, with its links to mining, the press and mills; the walking route to the Passadiços, with its connection to Castro de Ribamá; and a trip planned around the dates of the Feira. These different focuses can help guide your search for accommodation in Queirã.
