The roughly ten-kilometre PR5 trail, a viewpoint with panoramic views and buildings from several periods give São Joaninho a distinct character for hiking and culture. The route described in 2022 is a circular trail through Real, São Joaninho and Vila Pouca. Other points of interest include religious architecture, folklore and a riverside leisure area on the Criz.
Hiking the PR5
The PR5 route described in 2022 is approximately ten kilometres long. The circular trail starts and ends at Fonte do Soito, passes through Real, São Joaninho and Vila Pouca, and reaches an elevated viewpoint with panoramic views. Its length, starting point and return point, along with the named places, are useful reference points when choosing a hiking focus for your trip. Check the current condition of the trail before setting out.
Nature as a focus in its own right
At Lugar de São Jorge on the Criz River, the focus is on a different kind of stay. Visitors can fish, relax and enjoy nature there. The difference from the PR5 is clear: the circular trail shapes the activity there, while fishing and riverside relaxation are at the heart of a visit to Lugar de São Jorge. When planning, you can weigh up a hike against the activities by the water mentioned here.
Buildings and historical connections
The Igreja Matriz of São Joaninho was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries and has a Neoclassical façade. The construction period and façade style offer two different perspectives: the period places the building in time, while the style describes the design of its front. Anyone interested in historic architecture can consider these two aspects separately.
The Solar do Oitão in Vila Pouca bears a coat of arms. Vila Pouca is also home to the Capela de Nossa Senhora de Lurdes, while the Capela de Santo Estêvão stands in Casal Bom. Alongside the Igreja Matriz, there are therefore other clearly identified buildings, including two chapels, each with its own place name. The coat of arms of the Solar do Oitão and the church’s Neoclassical façade are distinct architectural features.
The Roman lagaretas in São Joaninho add another historical dimension. They complement the churches and chapels with a connection to Roman times. Local history thus spans different periods, from the Roman lagaretas to the construction of the Igreja Matriz between the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Folklore and festival dates
The first formation of the Rancho Folclórico e Etnográfico de São Joaninho dates back to 1928. The Rancho conveys regional traditions through music, dances, songs and traditional costumes. Alongside historic buildings, the town’s culture can also be explored through the performing arts. If you are interested in folklore, these four aspects offer a concrete starting point; check separately for the date of a particular performance.
An entry in the local festival calendar lists a festival in honour of São João on 24 June. São Lourenço, also called Festa de Verão, is listed for 10 August. If you would like to plan your trip around either date, check the programme for your travel year in advance.
