Discover Nelas from different perspectives: through the Vila’s architectural history and literature, its megalithic monuments, and the municipality’s connections to wine. The sights range from the Vila’s streets and squares to places and landscapes across the municipality.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The municipality of Nelas is accessible via the A25 and IP3 road corridors, the national road network, and the Beira Alta railway line, which serves Nelas station. Check transport connections before your trip. You can then explore the local highlights in different ways: a literary walk takes you through the Vila’s streets and squares, while other sights and the mountain biking route are located across the municipality.

Architectural History and Megaliths

The Paços do Concelho building brings together two chapters in the town’s history. It was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century as a residence for the Novais family and has served as the municipal administration’s headquarters since 1930. It is also considered one of the most significant historic buildings in the municipality of Nelas. The cautious dating of its original use and its administrative function since 1930 belong to different phases of its history.

Religious and manor buildings also offer tangible points of reference for comparing different periods. The Igreja Matriz in the parish of Nelas is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição and dates from the 19th century. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Tosse, also in the parish of Nelas, dates from the 17th to 18th centuries. In the municipality of Nelas, the Solar dos Condes de Santar also dates from the 17th to 18th centuries; its complex includes an attached chapel and a Mannerist altarpiece.

Megalithic monuments offer a different kind of historical evidence. The Orca de Pramelas is a small dolmen with a polygonal chamber, a floor paved with stone slabs, and a short symbolic corridor. Four monuments are part of the municipality of Nelas’ Prehistoric Route: the Orca da Lapa do Lobo, the Orca das Pramelas in Canas de Senhorim, the Orca do Folhadal, and the Orca do Pinhal dos Amiais in Senhorim. The architectural features of the Orca de Pramelas give a concrete sense of what to look for in a megalithic monument.

Literature, Wine and Events

The literary walk in Nelas explores António Lobo Antunes’ personal and literary connection with the town. It leads through the Vila’s streets, squares and notable places. Readings of excerpts are linked to the architectural heritage and local stories; the walk also explores the writer’s memories of Nelas from the mid-20th century.

The Estátua do Escanção was unveiled in 1966 and is considered a landmark of the municipality of Nelas and the demarcated Dão wine region. The annual Feira do Vinho do Dão in Nelas is also part of the wine tradition, and its purpose is to promote Dão wine. The Lagareta do Barroco has a circular base that may have been used to tread grapes and press grape pomace. This cautious interpretation of its possible former use should be distinguished from the established description of its shape.

The Carnival of Nelas is a special occasion with a history spanning several decades. It brings together hundreds of participants and attracts thousands of visitors. The parades start at Praça do Município and proceed through the Vila’s main streets. They feature floats and costumes prepared over several months by the Bairro da Igreja and Cimo do Povo neighbourhoods. If you are planning to travel for an event, check the specific dates in advance.

An Outdoor Activity

The Centro de BTT Nelas – Fácil (Level 1) is designed for beginner cyclists with little experience and stamina. The route runs over firm or paved surfaces and is described as obstacle-free. It passes through the northern part of the municipality of Nelas and the agricultural and wine-growing landscapes of Vilar Seco and Santar. This trip therefore differs from the literary walk through the Vila in both its focus and location. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.

To reach the Lagareta Medieval, turn off Avenida 25 de Abril and continue for 600 metres; then follow the signs on foot for about 800 metres. Check the signs on site.
