Alvite can be experienced through two distinct images of its plateau: the changing colours of spring flowers and the white winter blanket of frost and snow. In spring, the sequence of colours begins with green, violet and white, as the Urgueiras bloom; later, flowering broom plants turn the plateau yellow. In winter, frost and snow cover the plateau. Spring and winter thus each leave their own distinct impression on the landscape.
Prehistory and historical scenes
The Estátua-Menhir de Alvite stands in Quinta dos Caetanos in Alvite. It is dated approximately to the Chalcolithic or early Bronze Age, between the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. The site thus connects the plateau with an archaeological subject whose dating reaches far back into prehistory.
Historical photographs from 1966 show women spinning flax in front of their homes. Other scenes capture a procession and the threshing of maize. The images cover domestic textile work, a communal religious occasion and agricultural work. Together with the menhir statue, they offer different points of connection for a culture-focused look at Alvite.
Festivals and stories of tradition
Santo Amaro is celebrated in Alvite on 15 January. The celebration of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda is associated with the end of May. Thus, a specific day in January and a period towards the end of spring feature as distinct festivals in the annual calendar. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these festivals, check the dates in advance.
Several editions of the Feira de Tradições de Alvite have been held at Largo da Tulha. The event also features stories told by Alvite residents. At one edition, a traditional dinner was served in a typical tavern: broths, assorted meats, sausages and other cured meats, traditional bola and sweet milhos. The Feira thus brings together stories from the area and a specific insight into one of its culinary editions.
Getting around and walking route
Several roads connect Alvite with the municipalities of Tarouca and Vila Nova de Paiva. The walking route Rota da Serra – PR2 MBR, which passes through Alvite, is separate from these roads. The road connections provide a reference point for regional orientation; the route places the village on a walking trail. If you are considering Alvite as an overnight stop, these two aspects can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: regional connections or a hike that passes through the village.
The time of year can also shape your choice. The sequence of blooms on the plateau, the winter snow cover, archaeological heritage and local festivals each offer a different focus. Alvite can thus be explored through specific landscape and cultural themes, without combining its different places and experiences into a single itinerary.
