The Caramulo Experience Center is located in the village of Caramulo; the Museu do Caramulo is in the center of Vila do Caramulo. The two institutions focus on different aspects of automotive history. The Museu has a collection, while the Experience Center also displays vehicles from the Museu’s reserves.

Classic vehicles and their history

The Museu do Caramulo collection comprises more than 100 vehicles and spans almost 140 years of motoring history. The number describes the size of the collection, while the time span defines its historical scope. At the Caramulo Experience Center, visitors can see vehicles from the museum’s reserves, including some restoration projects. The Center also houses a restoration and maintenance workshop for classic vehicles. This brings two distinct perspectives together: the long history reflected in the museum collection and individual reserve vehicles, including restoration projects, at the Experience Center.

Archive and planning your visit

The Experience Center also has an extensive archive of automotive documents covering a century of history. Documents can be consulted and copied on request; arrange this before your visit. On September 4, 2026, the Center offered a form for booking visits. Check the booking information again before your trip. If you are interested in both a visit and archive materials, bear in mind the different steps: a booking form was available for visits, while documents can be consulted and copied on request.

Traditional practices and Serra heritage

Oficina do Burel is dedicated to the care of Burel, the Capucha Caramulana, and traditional knowledge and practices connected with the identity of the Serra do Caramulo. This is distinct from the focus on automotive history: it concerns care, knowledge and practices associated with the Serra. Near Caramulo is the Posto de Observação da Natureza do Jueus, an interpretation center for the heritage of the Serra do Caramulo. It is housed in the former primary school in Jueus. Here, a regionally focused subject is paired with a specific former school building as the center’s location.

Routes with different starting points

The Rota das Cruzes starts at Parque Jerónimo de Lacerda in Vila do Caramulo. It is 8 km long and lies in the Freguesia do Guardão. The Grande Rota do Caramulo starts at the Museu do Caramulo. These are different reference points when choosing a route: for the Rota das Cruzes, you can consider the starting point and length; for the Grande Rota, the start at the Museu do Caramulo.

Local history and landscape

Caramulo was founded in 1921 and developed into the largest sanatorium town in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. This development adds a distinct local history to the automotive history. The Serra do Caramulo is characterized by green fields, clear streams and impressive views. Alongside local and automotive history, the Serra’s specific landscape features offer another focus to explore.
