On the Tâmega, a seven-kilometre rafting trip run by Pena Aventura passes through rapids and includes jumps from rocks. The Fantasticable offers a different type of activity: the 1,538-metre-long cable runs 150 metres above the ground and connects Lamelas and Bustelo. In Ribeira de Pena, a river trip and a connection between two places are thus offered as distinct experiences. The Tâmega is also one of the landscape’s most important natural features and has played a significant role in the municipality’s history.

Trails and landscapes

Those who prefer to explore on foot will find several different routes. The Caminho do Abade begins in the centre of Ribeira de Pena at the Igreja Matriz do Divino Salvador. In Friúme, it leads to Ilha dos Amores, which is regarded as a viewpoint for taking in the landscape. The Levada de Santo Aleixo passes through Vale Escuro and the valleys of the Beça and Tâmega rivers.

The PR3 – Vale do Póio is also located within the municipality: this circular hiking trail is about 11.3 kilometres long and starts and ends in Cerva. For a stay in the town centre, the Caminho do Abade trailhead at the Igreja Matriz is a useful landmark.

The Parque Ambiental do Bucheiro is a protected area in Bucheiro, at the entrance to Ribeira de Pena. Its facilities include two interpretation centres and an environmental workshop. If you plan to visit these facilities, check their availability before your visit. The park complements the trails and river landscape with a focus on environmental education.

Getting there and finding your way

Local buses run daily from the bus stations in Vila Real and Guimarães directly to the centre of Ribeira de Pena and to Cerva. As timetables may change, it is advisable to check your connection before setting off. The town is also connected by road via the A7, which has a direct exit for Ribeira de Pena. The bus connection and motorway exit are two different points of reference for getting there; your specific plans will depend on the route you choose.

For local information, the Ribeira de Pena Tourist Office is located in the Museu Escola. There you can find information about regional cultural heritage, major sights and available activities. This can help you get a sense of the different aspects of a stay before dividing your days between trails, museums and activities.

Museums, linen and regional cuisine

The Museu Escola is housed in a former primary school, in a century-old building in the heart of Ribeira de Pena. It is dedicated to the history of education in Portugal. The Casa Museu de Camilo has a different focus: its permanent exhibition, “Camilo e Ribeira de Pena,” recreates the living quarters of Camilo and Joaquina and evokes a 19th-century rural home. The Ponte de Arame adds to the architectural heritage as a striking, imposing 20th-century bridge.

The Ecomuseu of Ribeira de Pena aims to preserve and share the cultural heritage of the local community. The Museu da Venda Nova houses the Ecomuseu’s interpretation centre; the museum displays collections related to archaeological, historical, artistic and ethnographic heritage. Together with the Museu Escola and the Casa Museu, these offer different ways to explore education, everyday history and regional culture.

Ribeira de Pena is particularly known for handwoven linen, especially in the parishes of Cerva and Limões. The annual Feira do Linho promotes local craftspeople and helps preserve the linen tradition. Dates may vary, so check them before your trip. The museums also offer the opportunity to learn about the craft of linen-making, try out techniques, touch the fabric and interact with the maker. As specific arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current details in advance.

Regional products also form part of the municipality’s identity: traditional, artisanally made smoked meats include Alheiras, Chouriça, Salpicão and Presunto. Maronesa beef comes from a cattle breed raised in the region’s mountains.
