Oura can be explored through two distinct hiking themes: the Caminho Português do Interior reaches the municipality of Chaves via the parish of Oura; the short “Trilho Ribeira de Oura” circular trail passes through part of this parish. In the Oura section, the pilgrim route is connected with Santiago and religious buildings, while the PR1 offers a loop with a river crossing and a former railway line. The routes therefore differ both in their form and in their thematic focus.

The Caminho through Oura

On the Caminho Português do Interior, the sequence of the route helps with navigation. The first few kilometres descend along the left bank, parallel to Estrada Nacional 2; this is followed by a slight climb and the turnoff to Oura. The stretch therefore includes both a route along the road and a clearly indicated change of direction. This is a different kind of navigation from the PR1: on the Caminho, you follow the route as a passage, while on the circular trail, the shared starting and finishing point takes centre stage.

Connections to Santiago and religious buildings

The Igreja Matriz de Oura is located on the Oura section of the Caminho; Santiago is its patron saint. The church features Baroque lines, and its stained-glass windows were created by the artist and painter João Vieira. The architecture and windows thus offer two perspectives on the same building: its design and a work of art attributed to a named artist. The section also includes the Cruzeiro de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, a point of interest connected with the Apostle Santiago. The connection to Santiago is therefore evident both in the church’s patron saint and in the Cruzeiro’s association with the Apostle.

The PR1 as a circular trail

The PR1 – Trilho Ribeira de Oura starts and ends next to the headquarters of the Associação Vidagustermas, where the information board is also located. The shared start and finish point makes the circular route tangible and gives you a clear reference point for planning your walk. In the direction of Vila Verde de Oura, the PR1 crosses the Ribeira de Oura via a medieval bridge. As far as the village of Oura, it follows the former railway line between Chaves and Régua, known as the Linha do Corgo. The bridge and the former railway line offer different points of interest along the circular trail: a river crossing on the route and a historic railway alignment.

Which type of route are you looking for?

If you would like to explore a pilgrim route and connections to Santiago, the Caminho is the right focus. If you are looking for a circular route with the same starting and finishing point, the PR1 offers a clearly defined route. This lets you choose how to explore Oura, whether you want to focus more on the pilgrimage context or on the straightforward navigation of a loop.
