Archaeological traces
A notable archaeological trace near Vilar de Maçada is the Sepultura Rupestre de Sobredos, also known as Campa dos Mouros. This rock-cut tomb is located in Sobredos, in the parish of Vilar de Maçada, municipality of Alijó, Vila Real District, at the edge of Vilar de Maçada on the road towards Vila Verde. Both names refer to the same place, so you may encounter either when finding your way around.
Just outside the village, an unpaved road leads from the EN583 towards Vila Verde to the Sepultura Rupestre de Sobredos. This description gives you a clear landmark at the edge of the village. As road conditions can change, check the unpaved section before setting out.
The PR9 ALJ: Circular Hike and Scenery
The PR9 ALJ is an approximately 10 km circular hiking route starting in Vilar de Maçada. Along the way, it approaches Castelo de Santa Bárbara, an ancient fortified settlement. It also passes through a transitional landscape between the Douro wine region and the Serras de Falperra and Padrela. The route also passes the Miradouro de Santa Bárbara, which offers a view over the Pinhão Valley. This makes it easy to identify the PR9 by its clear waypoints: a change in landscape, an archaeological site and a viewpoint lie along this circular route. The approximate distance can help you decide whether to plan the hike; check the route details locally before setting out.
Wine from Quinta de Fiães
Quinta de Fiães is located in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, in the Pinhão River valley. At its own winery, it produces and bottles the Quinta de Fiães DOC white wine. Its address is 5070-572 Vilar de Maçada; check the current visiting arrangements before your visit. Wine tastings in the region can be arranged, but confirm availability before making firm plans. The options differ for trip planning: for the PR9, check local route details; for a wine tasting, confirm arrangements and availability.
Culture and Festival Programme
A planned guided tour also included visits to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção and the Solar dos Pizzaro Portocarreiro.
A programme for the Festa de Vilar de Maçada in July 2019 included a morning procession at 10 a.m. from the Igreja Matriz to the Santuário and back, with Senhor Jesus da Capelinha and Santa Bárbara. Celebrations in honour of the same figures were scheduled for 11 to 16 July 2019. Both dates refer to 2019; if you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates applicable to your trip separately.
