Telões offers a clear thematic thread for an exploratory tour: the “Trilho Interpretativo das Aves de Rapina” runs within the Natura 2000 network in the Alvão/Marão Site of Community Importance and leads to the rocky outcrop with the ruins of Castelo de Aguiar de Pena. A short detour makes it possible to visit the monument. This brings the natural environment, the birds of prey theme and cultural heritage together in a specific hiking context. The trail provides a common thread, while the castle, chapels and Aldeia do Castelo offer further cultural perspectives on Telões.

The Birds of Prey Trail and its connections

The circular trail starts and ends in the churchyard of the parish church of Telões. Along the way, it reaches the rocky outcrop where the castle ruins stand; a short detour makes it possible to visit the monument. There is also a birds of prey observation centre on the trail near Castelo de Aguiar de Pena. The station and the castle ruins provide two specific points of interest along the route: its namesake birds of prey theme and its architectural heritage. You can walk the trail on its own or combine it with PR1 VPA “Trilho Interpretativo da Veronica micrantha”. The two trails share a section between the villages of Pontido and Castelo. When choosing a route, you can therefore opt for the standalone loop or a combination; the shared section is a specific point of reference for this connection.

The castle and its historical timeline

Castelo de Pena de Aguiar is classified as a National Monument. Two historical periods should be distinguished: the mountain’s military use dates back to Roman times, while the construction of the complex that survives today is believed to have taken place around the transition to the 12th century. The first date concerns the use of the hill, the second the surviving building complex. Thus, the site’s long military history and the tentatively dated origins of the surviving complex represent distinct historical layers.

The settlement and other places of interest

The Aldeia do Castelo in Telões lies beside Castelo de Pena de Aguiar. A description updated in 2007 characterises it as a homogeneous settlement of stone masonry and bricks, with its rural architectural style preserved, and rates its state of conservation as very good. In contrast to the castle, the focus here is on the settlement’s form, materials and rural style. This broadens the architectural perspective on Telões beyond a single monument. The castle and the Aldeia have different points of emphasis: Castelo is associated with its military history and historical dating, while the settlement is noted for its architectural form and specified materials.

Capela do Divino Salvador and Capelinha do Padre Manuel Couto are also among the places of interest in Telões. They add an ecclesiastical dimension alongside the castle, while the Aldeia do Castelo offers another architectural perspective through its settlement character. The cultural themes therefore also differ in scale: individual chapels and the Castelo are set against a homogeneous settlement. When choosing what to focus on, you can contrast this architectural and cultural history with the route’s focus on nature.
