The Way of St. James passes through Coura; the Castro de São Martinho and the Passadiços São Martinho de Coura add an archaeological site and a riverside route as further travel interests. If you are looking for accommodation in Coura, you can first decide whether the pilgrimage route, cultural heritage, or riverside landscape should be the focus. The local features differ: the Castro offers views over the surrounding area, the Passadiços run alongside the Coura, and cultural sites highlight education and local identity.

The Way of St. James and planned improvements

The Way of St. James passes through Coura. In September 2025, the municipal project “Este é o Caminho 2.0” was described as aiming to promote the Central Portuguese Way of St. James (Porto and the North) for religious and nature-based tourism. Improvements to mobility and safety through suitable signage and infrastructure adjustments were planned along the route in all four municipalities. Thus, two aspects of the Way of St. James sit alongside one another: its connection to Coura and the broader aims of the project. The planned measures apply to the route in all four municipalities.

Castro and Roman road

The Castro de São Martinho is also known as “Povoado Fortificado da Portela da Bustarenga”; both names refer to the same archaeological site. If you come across both names while planning your trip, they do not refer to two different sites. The Castro is located near Coura and offers a good overview of the surrounding landscape. The Roman road Via romana de Braga a Tui also runs nearby. The archaeological site and the Roman road are distinct points of reference: the name Via romana refers to the nearby road, not to another name for the Castro. This gives culture enthusiasts two distinct topics to explore: archaeology and a Roman transport route.

Cultural sites and local identity

The Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho de Coura is located in Coura. As a parish church, it is a different local point of reference from the archaeological Castro near Coura. The Antiga Escola Primária de São Martinho de Coura adds a perspective connected to education and community. The former school was repurposed in 2021. A municipal cultural programme page described it in 2023 as a cultural and educational centre serving the community; the programme may change.

An interpretation project promotes the population’s identity in connection with the Coura River. This broadens the cultural perspective beyond individual buildings and archaeological sites: here, the focus is on the relationship between the population and the river.

Along the Coura

The Passadiços São Martinho de Coura route runs alongside the Coura and follows granite walkways. Unlike the Castro, which offers an overview of the surrounding landscape, the defining feature here is the route along the water. This comparison can help you choose the kind of natural setting you prefer: a view over the surrounding area or a route along the river. As trail conditions can change, check the route’s condition before planning your visit.
