The SantuĂĄrio de Nossa Senhora da Peneda is located in Gavieira, at an altitude of 690 metres, in the Peneda-GerĂȘs National Park. When planning a hike, it is worth checking the trail length, stated duration, difficulty, and route: the specific details vary from one trail to another.

Hiking trails by length and route

The PR 17 – Trilho da Peneda runs through the Serra da Peneda between the mountain village of Peneda and the Branda de Bouças dos Homens. These two named endpoints provide a sense of the trail’s location.

The PR 1 – Romeiros da Peneda – Rota do Sistelo is a linear trail, classified as a difficult short route. It is 18.4 kilometres long, with a stated duration of seven hours. The Rota de Sistelo connects the villages and summer settlements of Sistelo, Aveleira, and Gavieira, then descends to the Santuário da Nossa Senhora da Peneda.

For comparison, the PR 18 – Trilho Pertinho do CĂ©u is a moderately difficult short route, 7.6 kilometres long, with a stated duration of three hours and 30 minutes. Both its distance and stated duration are shorter than those of the PR 1; the difficulty ratings also differ.

The GR 1 – Travessia das Serras da Peneda e Soajo is considerably longer. This circular, very difficult long-distance route is 74.5 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 24 hours. The comparison therefore answers two different questions: the PR 18 is shorter and rated as more moderate than the PR 1, while the PR 1 and GR 1 also differ in being linear and circular, respectively.

Mountain Landscape and Heritage

Branda da Seida is partly accessible on foot from the Rouças-Gavieira area. It lies on granite terrain and includes pastureland. It is also associated with spring water at the Regato da Feicha, a tributary of the Rio Gingiela. There are also groups of circular-plan round huts and a wolf trap enclosure. The local mountain landscape therefore includes distinctive built features as well as terrain and water features.

Pilgrimage and Regional Culture

The Romaria de S. Bento do Cando takes place annually in Gavieira on three occasions: on 21 March, from 3 to 11 July, and on 10 August. The July period lasts several days, while the other two occasions are each a single day. As detailed programmes may vary, check the information for the relevant date before planning a trip specifically for the event.

In the region around Gavieira, the Rota Cisterciense do Alto Minho-Galiza passes through. It connects Cistercian houses from the Lima Valley via Melgaço to Galicia, extending the cultural context beyond Gavieira.
