Amora brings together church history and life by the water: the historic centre developed around two focal points, the parish church of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte Sião and the waterfront. Agriculture, as well as river and sea transport, shaped the population and its activities there. These two roots offer different perspectives on the town’s history: the church provides specific historical dates, while the waterfront represents earlier livelihoods. Parque Municipal do Serrado adds another option, with shady picnic areas, paths and spaces for activities. This gives you a chance to discover culture, the town’s connection to the water and a green break as distinct sides of Amora.

The Church, Historical Dates and Local Traditions

Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Monte Sião was rebuilt in 1757 after the earthquake of 1 November 1755. A tombstone dated 1578 and an inscription on the pulpit dated 1594 indicate that the church dates back to at least the 16th century. The rebuilding and the older inscriptions mark different chapters in the church’s history: 1757 marks the rebuilding, while the two dated references point to an earlier history for the place of worship.

The historic character of the centre is also shaped by local legends, traditions and picturesque stories. They add a narrative dimension to the town’s history alongside its architectural landmarks. This distinction is useful when choosing cultural themes: the dates point to specific historical evidence, while legends and traditions broaden the picture of the centre with local lore.

A Green Break at Parque Municipal do Serrado

Parque Municipal do Serrado offers a different focus from the historic centre. Beneath densely leafed trees, there are shady picnic areas with tables and benches. The park also has walking paths, a large lawn for activities and games, a play and recreation area, and restroom facilities.

The facilities offer different ways to spend time in the park: the tables and benches are part of the picnic areas, while the lawn and play and recreation area provide space for activities and games. The paths add the option of a walk. You can choose the green space to suit what you have in mind—perhaps a meal in the shade, some exercise or time in the play area.

Water and Nautical Activities

Centro Náutico de Amora supports nautical activities in Baía do Seixal. New ramps by the centre improve access to the water. The facilities were intended to support the development of canoeing and sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming and triathlon by Clube de Canoagem de Amora and Associação Naval Amorense. Initiatives in windsurfing and dragon boat racing were also planned.

Two distinct aspects of Amora’s connection to the water sit side by side: river and sea transport once shaped the population and its activities along the waterfront, while the nautical centre focused on sporting activities. A description from 2018 also mentions an environmental education walking trail along Amora’s waterfront, with guidance and orientation. If you plan to take part in this activity, check the current dates.
