Moita lies on the left bank of the Tagus estuary, opening onto an expansive riverside landscape. More than 20 kilometres of waterfront lie within the municipality; landscaped green spaces alternate with salt marshes, former salt pans, quays, shipyards and a river beach. This variety shapes a visit: alongside traces of the riverside landscape, you’ll encounter evidence of local history and a range of ways to explore the waterfront.

Riverside Paths and the River Landscape

A completed waterfront project included seven interpretive trails, a wayfinding system and information panels about landscape and cultural heritage features. A mooring for traditional boats was also established at Cais da Moita. A municipal riverside path connects Cais da Moita with Sítio das Marinhas. This puts both the development of the waterfront landscape and specific riverside locations at the heart of an exploration.

The routes of the Varino “O Boa Viagem” also offer different highlights. The Rota Ribeirinha runs along the waterfront area of the municipality of Moita. The Rota com História connects Moita and Alhos Vedros and includes a visit to Palacete Condes Sampayo. The Varino is classified as an asset of municipal cultural interest and offers an annual programme of river trips for individuals and groups. A schedule is listed for 2026; check the relevant dates before making plans.

Buildings and Collections

Construction of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem in Moita began in May 1631. The tidal mill Moinho de Maré stands at the quay in Alhos Vedros and was probably built by Pero Vicente in the first half of the 15th century. The mill’s dating remains a well-founded supposition, while May 1631 is given as the start of construction for the church. These two different historical reference points lead to the municipality’s historic buildings.

Another glimpse into art history takes you to Alhos Vedros: in December 2022, the Palacete do Morgado da Casa da Cova / Condes de Sampayo displayed the Coleção Régia. The collection comprises 26 portraits of Portuguese kings from the 18th century, created by painter and portraitist Miguel António do Amaral.

Traditions and Events

Several recurring events bring different themes to the calendar. The Romaria a Cavalo Moita–Viana do Alentejo takes place annually, reviving an older religious equestrian tradition. The Feira de Maio is usually held on the fourth weekend of May. Traditional bull runs are held on Avenida Teófilo de Braga; the programme also includes gatherings of aficionados, tertulias, bullfighting clubs and music. Exact dates and programme details vary from year to year.

The annual Biofesta promotes organic producers and local, regional and other environmental and sustainability projects, and welcomes hundreds of visitors. A different kind of event is the “Abra a Bagageira” initiative: it takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month on Avenida Marginal in Moita. As individual arrangements may change, it’s worth checking the date before your visit.

Getting Your Bearings in the Region

Moita is close to Lisbon and Setúbal. Bus services connect Moita with Lisbon’s Gare do Oriente and with Seixal, Barreiro, Montijo and Alcochete. As timetables and routes may change, check current services for your journey. For planning activities, the options are easy to distinguish: riverside paths explore the river landscape, the Varino routes combine river trips with selected waterfront and cultural themes, and events add their own seasonal highlights.
