Several stories meet in Torres Novas: the castle represents the town’s political importance in the Middle Ages, museums trace its history from early settlement to industry, and trails explore the Almonda and the Serra de Aire. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between these themes: churches and exhibitions offer specific histories of buildings and collections, while the two hiking trails described here differ in length and route type.

Castle and Churches: Reading History in the Buildings

Castelo de Torres Novas is classified as a National Monument. D. Sancho I conquered it in 1190; the castle is considered a symbol of the town’s political importance in the Middle Ages. A footpath runs around the walls. The towers offer views of the Serra de Aire and the surrounding town. This allows the historical context and the building’s viewpoints to be considered as two different ways of experiencing the site.

The MisericĂłrdia of Torres Novas was founded in 1534. Its church, the Igreja da MisericĂłrdia, features a Renaissance portal, a 17th-century ceiling, carved altarpieces and tile decoration from the same century. It is classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico. The Igreja de SĂŁo Pedro offers different architectural features: its interior consists of three naves, and the main chapel is clad in 17th-century polychrome tiles. Comparing the churches therefore offers a chance to notice different features, such as their portals, layouts and tile decoration.

Museums: From the Almonda to Industrial History

The Núcleo Museológico Cerca Da Vila is located in the historic centre next to Castelo de Torres Novas and is part of the town’s cultural route. Its permanent exhibition traces the history of human settlement in the area that is now the municipality, from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages, using the Almonda River as its starting point. It also displays a human fossil skull from Gruta da Aroeira, dating back 400,000 years. The individual find and the exhibition’s long historical narrative offer two different perspectives on the past. As exhibitions may change, it is advisable to check the current display before visiting.

The Museu Municipal Carlos Reis is housed in the Casa do Mogo de Melo, also known as Casa do Mogo. The 18th-century house has a long façade, with an old chapel at one end; the building is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Concelhio. The museum features paintings by Carlos Reis and sacred art alongside archaeological exhibitions on local history. These range from prehistoric times through Romanization to the Middle Ages, adding further collection themes to the account of the Almonda at Cerca Da Vila.

The museum centre at Central do Caldeirão presents another aspect of the town’s history. It is located in a former hydroelectric power station that generated and distributed electricity in Torres Novas from 1922–23 until 1984. The centre opened in 2023, at the same time as conservation work was carried out on the mill and oil press at Caldeirão. Its collection of industrial archaeology preserves memories of Torres Novas’s workers’ neighbourhood. Unlike art, religious history and archaeology, the focus here is on work and energy supply.

Hiking Trails and the River Landscape

The PR1 TNV – Rota do Almonda is a 23-kilometre linear hiking trail along the river. It connects Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros with Reserva Natural do Paul do Boquilobo and also includes a section through the town. The PR2 TNV – Rota dos Vales da Serra is shorter at 13 kilometres, follows a circular route and reaches the summit of the Serra de Aire. Its trail passes through densely vegetated valleys and ravines. The comparison reveals more than a difference in distance: the PR1 route description is shaped by the river and its linear form, while the PR2 is defined by its circular route, summit destination and valley trails.

The Jardim da Avenida is also located along the Almonda. This riverside garden has leafy trees, climbing plants, terraces and swings. It is intended for local residents and visitors, offering a different way to spend time by the river than the longer PR1. Sports facilities include the Piscinas Municipais Fernando Cunha complex, which can host major competitions in swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and diving. As well as its historical attractions, Torres Novas offers points of interest for visitors interested in the landscape, riverside spaces or sport.
