In Achete, a church with distinctive architectural details and a 19 km circular route offer two different points of interest. The Igreja Paroquial de Santa Maria de Achete is a building of architectural interest in the seat of the freguesia. It is also the starting and ending point of the Rota das Fontes de Santa Maria. When planning your trip, you can focus on local history and architecture or make the longer route your main activity.
Church, chapel and tradition
The interior of the Igreja Paroquial de Santa Maria de Achete is completely covered in 17th-century azulejos. The tiles are of the “PADRÃO” and “TAPETE” types. The church’s tower has a sundial. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Aracela, also called Senhora do Leite, is considered one of the most important symbols of Achete’s local identity.
The Day of Vera Cruz on 3 May is also part of local tradition. The custom was to make a cross early in the morning from may, broom and other wildflowers, and place it on the main door of the house. The practice was intended to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity to the harvests. It is recorded as a traditional belief, not as a current festival announcement.
Circular route and springs
The Rota das Fontes de Santa Maria is a 19 km circular route, starting and ending at the Igreja de Santa Maria de Achete. Along the way, it passes the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Aracela and links historic springs and other points of interest with urban, wooded and agricultural areas. Its length makes the route a distinct option when planning your trip.
In the area of the União de Freguesias de Achete, Azoia de Baixo e Póvoa de Santarém, the Rota das Fontes project also includes the Rota das Fontes de Alexandre Herculano and connects with the Caminhos de Fátima footpath. The Rota das Fontes de Santa Maria is therefore part of a larger network of routes.
Achete’s springs highlighted for their religious past or the qualities of their water include the Fonte das Almas and the Fonte do Piúlho. A legend is also associated with the Fonte das Almas. These sites are therefore notable for both religious traditions and local stories.
Landscape and trip planning
The geographical description refers to the Freguesia de Achete: it lies 15 km north of Santarém, on the right bank of the Tagus, in the Bairro area. The local terrain includes hills, smaller elevations and some plateaus. The freguesia is rural and predominantly agricultural.
A municipal food guide from 2023 lists O Panturras in Advagar, serving traditional Portuguese cuisine and petiscos. Check whether it is currently operating before visiting.
If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether the church and cultural sites or the 19 km route will be the focus of your trip. This lets you plan your accommodation around what you want to do in Achete.
