There are several themes to explore during a stay in Envendos: thermal waters with a long history of use, archaeological traces along the Ocreza, and a circular route offering views of its meanders. If you are planning an overnight stay, you can focus on the thermal facilities, archaeological sites or the Rota dos Envendos. Each theme brings different planning considerations—from the thermal baths’ opening hours to the length of the route.
Thermal Waters and Wellness Facilities
The thermal waters of Termas da Ladeira de Envendos emerge from the rock at 21°C. Their use has been documented for more than 100 years. Facilities include therapeutic thermal treatments, wellness services, and two- or three-day programmes for wellbeing and relaxation. This combines the water’s natural properties with a long history of use. The thermal season and opening hours are currently listed as closed. Before travelling, check whether the facilities will be open on your dates before planning around them.
Rock Art and Archaeological Traces
Most of the rock art depictions along the Ocreza are located in Vale do Souto, Vale da Rovinhosa and the area around the Pracana Dam, on the right bank of the Ocreza. These areas belong to the Freguesia of Envendos and the Concelho of Mação.
Archaeological finds in the Ocreza area include rock engravings at Ribeira da Ocreza and a depiction of an equid. This is considered the first find of Palaeolithic art in the open air in southern Portugal. Pego da Rainha is also home to one of the main sites of the Mação Climbing School. Climbing is therefore another distinct theme to consider when planning your trip.
Circular Route with Views of the Meanders
The Rota dos Envendos is a circular route. It starts and ends at Praça da República in the centre of Envendos, making the square both the starting point and the finish. The route is approximately 15.7 km long and climbs to Castelo Velho da Zimbreira. From there, it offers a privileged view of the Ocreza’s meanders. Both the approximate distance and the climb to the viewpoint are relevant when planning your trip.
Ancient Routes and the History of the Settlement
Ponte Romana da Ladeira de Envendos was built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD as part of an ancient road system linking Idanha and Ródão. The Foral marks another chapter in the settlement’s history: Envendos received it from King Manuel I on 18 May 1518. These two historical reference points are far apart in time and highlight different themes—the ancient connection between Idanha and Ródão, and the legal history of Envendos.
Public Swimming Pools
The seat of the Freguesia of Envendos has public swimming pools, a bar, a leisure area and a children’s playground. These facilities give this location a different focus from the archaeological sites or the Rota dos Envendos. If you are weighing up different interests for your stay, you can consider the swimming pools as a separate option alongside thermal facilities, history and walking.
