The history of Foros de Salvaterra is closely tied to the use of the land. In 1845, the Junta de ParĂłquia de Salvaterra de Magos initiated the aforamento process to clear scrubland for cultivation and make the soil arable. The division of the plots made new forms of land management and settlement possible. Soil, land management, and settlement are therefore all part of the area's history.
Agriculture and a changing landscape
At the beginning of the 20th century, Foros de Salvaterra had extensive vineyards as well as large eucalyptus and pine forests. Together, these two points in time offer different perspectives on the history of the land: in 1845, the focus was on clearing land for cultivation and settlement; in the early 20th century, vineyards and woodland were defining features.
The reservoir and its functions
The Barragem de Magos offers another perspective on the landscape: it is a water-management structure with clearly defined functions. Completed in 1934, the reservoir covers 90 hectares. The Barragem was built for flood protection, drainage, and irrigation of the PaĂşl de Magos. A regional account also links its completion to the region's economic development.
Carp and Pimpões are caught at the Barragem de Magos. A regional report describes the Associação de pesca desportiva Pica e Puxa from Foros de Salvaterra as the main organizer of activities at the reservoir. Water management and angling are two different ways of experiencing the same place.
Fish and regional cuisine
The cuisine of Foros de Salvaterra is shaped by the LezĂria, the Charneca, and the Tagus. River fish used in regional cuisine include Sável, Saboga, Barbo, Fataça, lamprey, and eel. They are prepared in dishes such as soups, Açordas, and Molhatas, as well as fried dishes. The variety lies not only in the types of fish but also in the ways they are prepared—a concrete introduction to local food culture.
Traditions and cultural heritage
Local traditions are based mainly on bullfighting, Campinos, and equestrian arts; agriculture; and river or Avieira culture. Folk groups from Foros de Salvaterra and Várzea Fresca recreate the traditional costumes of this parish. The local Campino costume is depicted with a rider on horseback holding up a Pampilho. The image thus connects the equestrian arts mentioned above with the depiction of traditional dress. The Igreja Matriz is also among the heritage features of Foros de Salvaterra.
Events and sports
Local events span several categories: the Comissão de festas organizes sporting events, cultural events, and local celebrations. The municipality's annual events calendar lists the Festas em Honra do Imaculado Coração de Maria in July. If you would like to include this celebration in your trip, check the events calendar for your chosen year.
Foros de Salvaterra also has a padel court. The parish sports facilities directory for 2026 lists it; if you would like to include it in your plans, check the current availability before visiting.
