Wine offers a gateway to rural culture and agricultural history in the Concelho do Cartaxo. The Museu Rural e do Vinho do Concelho do Cartaxo features the permanent exhibition “À Descoberta da Cultura Rural”, a restored old winery and a typical tavern. The Núcleo do Museu Rural e do Vinho focuses on local agricultural activities, especially winegrowing. Guided tours may include tastings of wines from the Concelho. Here, you can learn about both the work involved in winemaking and its cultural context.

Wine traditions and regional festivals

The region around Cartaxo is known for its full-bodied red wine, popularly called “carrascão”. You can explore its wine traditions at the Museu Rural e do Vinho and along the wine routes. The Festa do Vinho also brings wine together with regional cuisine, music, competitions and bullfights. It takes place every year in Cartaxo. If you’d like to include the festival in your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

Buildings from different periods

Next to the Igreja Matriz of Cartaxo stands the Cruzeiro Manuelino, which has been a National Monument since 1910. Parts of the former Pelourinho of Cartaxo have been incorporated into the structure of the Chafariz Municipal. The Igreja Matriz de Pontével features tiles dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Igreja Matriz de Valada probably dates from 1211 and was consecrated on 6 January 1528. The architectural features of the Igreja de São Bartolomeu include a wooden ceiling over the nave, a transept, rib vaults and a round-arched barrel vault in the chancel. In Vila Chã de Ourique, the Monumento alusivo à Batalha de Ourique was inaugurated in 1932.

Collections and local history

The Biblioteca Municipal Marcelino Mesquita preserves the estate of playwright Marcelino Mesquita. It includes family photographs, correspondence, manuscripts and newspaper clippings. The Museu de Miniaturas of the Ateneu ArtĂstico Cartaxense offers another way to explore local cultural history: it grew out of the Cortejo do Trabalho, held annually in Cartaxo from 1903. The Museu de Miniaturas is open to visitors Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 19:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:30. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Festivals and practical information

Since 2008, the Procissão em Honra do Senhor Jesus dos Passos has marked the Lenten season in Cartaxo every year; before then, it had not taken place for 34 years. If you’d like to see the procession, plan your visit around this seasonal event and check the specific date in advance.

Road and rail connections are available for getting around the Concelho do Cartaxo: the Concelho has a direct connection to the A1. There is also the EN 365-2 bypass to the A1 junction at Aveiras de Cima, and the EN3 between Carregado and Santarém. The Linha Ferroviária do Norte also serves the Concelho. Check the current route before setting off.

The Complexo Desportivo e Cultural da Quinta das Pratas includes municipal swimming pools, two tennis courts, two multi-purpose sports courts and various facilities for outdoor activities. Two padel courts are privately managed. As availability and management arrangements may change, check the current status of the facilities before visiting.
