Atalaia offers two very different perspectives on time: Igreja Matriz da Atalaia is a 16th-century building, while the archaeological site of Ribeira da Atalaia contains traces of settlement spanning more than 300,000 years. Encosta do Telégrafo offers another perspective, with views of the Tagus, Santarém, Ourém and the surrounding landscapes. Architecture and archaeology thus sit alongside a focus on the landscape; the Way of St. James provides a route of its own.

Church and Cultural History

Igreja Matriz da Atalaia, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is classified as a National Monument. It was founded between 1514 and 1528 by D. Pedro de Meneses, Count of Cantanhede. The portal was completed in 1528 and attributed to the French sculptor and architect João de Ruão. The founding period and the completion of the portal are distinct milestones: one refers to the founding of the church, the other to the completion of the portal. Together, they place the building in its historical context without conflating both events into a single date. The alternative name Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção refers to the same church.

Another cultural connection is the intervention created by Vhils. It is part of ARTEJO and was developed in partnership with the EDP Foundation’s Public Arts programme and the Vila Nova da Barquinha Municipal Council. Alongside the building’s earlier history, the cultural picture therefore also includes an artistic intervention and the partners involved in its development.

Archaeology and Long Timescales

At the archaeological site of Ribeira da Atalaia, traces of human settlement spanning more than 300,000 years overlap. This represents a different timescale from the history of Igreja Matriz: for the church, the century, its founding and the completion of its portal can be distinguished; at the site, the long sequence of human settlement takes centre stage. Those interested in the past of the area will therefore find two distinct perspectives here—the history of a specific building and an archaeological timespan that reaches far beyond it.

A religious occasion is also documented with a specific date: a local report from 17 August 2022 records that the patron saint’s feast in honour of Nossa Senhora da Assunção was celebrated in the parish of Atalaia on 15 August.

Views and the Way of St. James

Climbing Encosta do Telégrafo offers views of the Tagus River, Cardiga Castle, Santarém and Ourém, the Lezíria and the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros. The view takes in both individual places and larger landscapes. The Way of St. James passes by Encosta on the outskirts of Atalaia. The route crosses the municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha over a distance of about eight kilometres; one stage heads towards the Junta de Freguesia da Atalaia. The approximately eight kilometres refers to the route through the municipality, while the Atalaia stage is described by its direction. This keeps the two details clear in their respective geographical contexts.
