Railway history, church art and river landscapes offer three different ways to explore Trofa. When planning your trip, you can focus on the side of the town that interests you most: historic railway buildings and exhibitions, religious furnishings, or trails and views across the landscape.

Railway History and Cultural Sites

The Antiga Estação da Trofa was inaugurated in 1875. The former railway station building was converted into a cultural space and returned to the Trofa community. The exhibition tells the story of both the railway and Trofa. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check its current status before your trip.

Casa da Cultura da Trofa provides the public with exhibition spaces, a library, a multimedia room, an open-air auditorium, gardens and a terrace. The cultural centre therefore encompasses different types of spaces, from exhibitions and media facilities to outdoor areas. If a particular offering is important to your plans, check the current programme in advance.

The Alameda da Estação was created as a large pedestrian area during the redevelopment of the station district. It forms an urban park covering more than 67,000 square metres. In addition to the historic railway buildings, this extensive landscaped park is another part of Trofa you can explore.

Churches, Architecture and Festivities

The Igreja Paroquial de Santiago de Bougado was designed by Nicolau Nasoni. The Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores tells a different story of construction: it was completely renovated in 1879 under the patronage of Comendador Manuel José Ribeiro. The precise date of the renovation and its connection to its benefactor give your visit a specific historical context.

The Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho de Bougado stands out for its two facing pulpits and lavish Rococo carved altar decoration. The pulpits and richly carved altar area provide different points of interest: the pulpits facing one another on the one hand, and the decorative woodcarving on the other. Visitors interested in church architecture will find more than a single focal point here.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores is the central feature of the annual festival held in its honour. It takes place on the third Sunday in August; the date may vary if that Sunday falls on 15 August. Check the specific festival dates if you would like to plan your trip around the event.

Views and religious history come together at Monte de São Gens de Cidai. From there, the view extends across the Baixo Ave, parts of Trofa, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Santo Tirso, out to the sea, and over the inland areas of Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim. The hill also has a flight of steps with Stations of the Cross. The Capela de São Gens was rebuilt in the 20th century.

Since 1951, festivities in honour of S. Gens have been held at the Capela de São Gens on Monte de Cidai on the first weekend of September. If you would like to experience this tradition, check the event dates for your travel dates. This makes it easy to distinguish between Trofa’s two festival periods: the festival in honour of Nossa Senhora das Dores in August and the celebrations for S. Gens in September.

Riverside Walks and Viewpoints

Parque das Azenhas lies on the banks of the Rio Ave and is notable for its natural landscape. A linear interpretive trail of about five kilometres runs along the riverbank. Its approximate length gives you an idea of the distance, while its linear layout is a useful feature to consider when planning your route.

Parque das Azenhas and Alameda da Estação offer a clear contrast in landscape: a riverside trail through a natural setting on the one hand, and an urban park in a redeveloped station district on the other. This can help you choose whether a linear waterside route or a landscaped urban green space better suits your interests.

Planning Your Journey and Stay

The 2027 railway network directory lists Trofa as a station on the Linha do Minho. If you plan to travel by train, check the specific connections and journey times for your travel dates. You can use your interests to guide your choice of accommodation: railway and urban history, church art, cultural sites or river landscapes each offer a different perspective on Trofa.
