A figure-eight loop trail starts at the Engenho de Sebolido; viewpoints on the slope of Serra da Boneca open up wide views over the Douro. Sebolido therefore offers several specific highlights to consider when planning your trip: hiking, local architectural and olive oil history, and water sports.

On foot between Boneca and the Douro

The PR5 PNF “A Boneca, o Baloiço e o Douro” is a figure-eight loop trail that starts at the Engenho de Sebolido. It also passes the Parque de Lazer de Sebolido, which lies on the banks of the Douro. This clearly identifies both the starting point and another named place along the route. Trail conditions can change; check the latest information before setting out.

Miradouro da Boneca is on the slope of Serra da Boneca and offers wide views over the Douro. Baloiço da Boneca is also located on the slope and opens up wide views. The focus differs between these places: at these two spots, the views of the Douro take centre stage, while the PR5 stands out for its loop format and its starting point at the Engenho.

Sebolido’s landscape is characterised by large, steep mountain hollows; the summit is popularly known as Boneca. The name also appears in the names of the PR5, the Miradouro and the Baloiço, giving several of the places described a shared name.

Water sports as a different focus

The DouroWake water sports centre in Sebolido offers water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, rowing, windsurfing and sailing. These activities provide a range of options alongside hiking: rather than planning your trip solely around the loop trail, you can also make water sports a focus in their own right. Options range from kayaking and rowing to windsurfing, sailing, water skiing and wakeboarding.

Monuments and olive oil history

Sebolido’s architectural heritage includes the parish church O Cruzeiro and the Capela da Senhora do Monte. Traditional schist houses are another local attraction. Religious buildings and homes thus show different sides of the area’s built heritage.

The Engenho de Sebolido is an olive oil mill dating from 1864. Its equipment includes a beam press and an animal-powered milling basin; it was used to press olives to extract olive oil. Its original equipment offers a tangible glimpse into the history of oil production.

Tours of the Engenho are available year-round by prior arrangement with the Museu Municipal de Penafiel and are intended for groups of ten or more. If you are planning a group tour, contact the museum in advance and confirm the latest visitor information.

Festivals and your stay

Local traditions also provide specific dates to consider when planning your trip. Nossa Senhora do Monte is celebrated on the Sunday closest to 11 or 12 May. The Sagrado Coração de Jesus festival takes place from 15 to 18 June, and S. Paulo from 11 to 13 July. The annual “Sebolido em Festa” brings together music, tradition and regional cuisine. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the date of that year’s event.

Solar de Sebolido, overlooking the Douro, was built in the 18th century and restored for rural tourism in 2012. The property therefore brings together the landscape, history and a direct connection to rural tourism. Together with the trails, water sports and festivals, it offers a range of themes to explore during your stay in Sebolido.
