The place name Duas Igrejas refers to two religious places of worship: the present-day Igreja Paroquial de Santo Adrião and an old chapel in the hamlet of Passais. Another local highlight is Sopa Seca. In the parish of Duas Igrejas in the municipality of Penafiel is Casa da Sopa Seca, a cultural and gastronomic venue. The history of the place and its cuisine raise several questions: Which buildings lie behind the name, how is the dish prepared, and how is its tradition preserved?
Local History and the Church
Until the mid-19th century, the parish of Duas Igrejas was known as “Santo Adrião de Canas de Duas Igrejas.” The name Duas Igrejas itself is explained by the present-day Igreja Paroquial de Santo Adrião and the old chapel in Passais. The parish church has a rectangular floor plan, with a nave and chancel. The nave forms the main space, while the chancel is the liturgically prominent area. The architecture can therefore be understood through two specific features: its overall rectangular shape and the division of the church interior.
Sopa Seca: Preparation and Tradition
To make Sopa Seca, slices of bread are dipped in a boiled syrup made with water, sugar, and cinnamon. They are then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and baked in the oven. The preparation thus involves several clear steps: the bread absorbs the syrup, gets another layer of sugar and cinnamon, and is then baked. The dish can therefore be described not only by its ingredients but also by its distinctive method of preparation.
The institutional preservation of Sopa Seca is also part of local history. Casa da Sopa Seca is the headquarters of the Confraria da Sopa Seca. Its role is to promote and preserve this gastronomic tradition. The recipe and the Confraria thus offer different insights into the same subject: one describes how the dish is made; the other sets out the mission of carrying its tradition forward.
Routes and Festival Program
A route description from 2014 lists the Rota das Duas Igrejas as a 22-kilometer circular route within the parish of Duas Igrejas in the municipality of Penafiel. According to the description, the start and finish are at the sports field of Grupo Desportivo de Duas Igrejas. Check route conditions and markings before setting out. A 2021 description of the Milhundos–Duas Igrejas walking trail says it starts at Penafiel’s municipal swimming pools and heads towards Duas Igrejas. The two descriptions offer different points of reference. The circular route specifies its length and start and finish points; the other trail gives its starting point and direction.
The religious program of the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário includes novenas, candlelit processions, a solemn Mass, and a large procession in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. The cultural and social program includes performances by music groups, brass bands, and folk groups, as well as fireworks. Religious ceremonies thus sit alongside music, folklore, and other community events. The exact program may vary from one edition to another. If you plan to visit for the Festa, check the dates and program for your chosen period in advance.
