The sights in Marco De Canaveses range from modern church architecture to archaeological and medieval remains; leisure activities are also available by the water. During your stay, you can explore architectural history, the finds at Tongobriga and activities at Praia Fluvial de Bitetos or Parque Fluvial do Tâmega.

Church architecture from different periods

Igreja de Santa Maria was designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and consecrated on 7 July 1996. Its smooth, white, light-filled surfaces stand out from the neighbouring buildings. Its design, precise consecration date and described features make the church a clearly defined example of modern religious architecture.

Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Vila Boa do Bispo represents a different building phase: its Romanesque phase dates to the 12th and 13th centuries. Igreja de Santo André de Vila Boa de Quires was built in the second quarter of the 13th century as part of a monastic complex. Its main façade is considered one of the most elaborate in the Baixo Tâmega and resembles Igreja de Barrô in Resende. These points of comparison help you assess the churches not only by their age, but also by their architecture.

Tongobriga and its archaeological heritage

The ruins of the Roman city of Tongobriga cover around 15 hectares and have been classified as a National Monument since 1986. Excavations there identified a Castro and Roman residential areas, a wall and a forum, as well as pre-Roman and Roman baths and a necropolis. The finds thus encompass different aspects of life in the settlement in earlier times.

At the archaeological site, visitors can access the Interpretation Centre and the archaeological area with the ruins. As visitor arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit. This allows you to take a visit to the Interpretation Centre and ruins into account when planning, without assuming fixed visiting hours.

Monuments, local history and distinctive details

The Memorial de Alpendorada belongs to a type of monument with funerary and commemorative functions that emerged in the 13th century and is found only in Portugal. One specific detail can be seen on the structure itself: a sword is engraved on the upper stones of the plinth that supports the arch. This monument therefore brings together the broader function of its type and one individual, visible architectural feature.

Igreja de Santa Maria de Sobretâmega also combines architectural history with a precise local setting. It stands on the right bank of the Tâmega, at the entrance to the former Canaveses bridge, and was founded after 1320. Its main chapel contains a gilded wooden altarpiece in the national style. These offer different points of reference: its position in relation to the former bridge, its founding period and a feature of its furnishings.

Canaveses – Aldeia de Portugal includes Rua Direita on the Sobretâmega side. On the São Nicolau side is the former Tamacana street, now called Rua de São Nicolau. The two street names illustrate the described layout of the village across its two sides. Museu Carmen Miranda offers a different cultural focus: it is devoted almost exclusively to Carmen Miranda, who is the focus of its exhibition spaces.

Activities by the water

Praia Fluvial de Bitetos is used for canoeing, water skiing and motorboating. It is also designated “Praia Acessível/Praia Para Todos”. You should understand this designation as an official status, not as a statement about every individual facility or a particular use.

Parque Fluvial do Tâmega brings together several named facilities: it has a picnic area, a footpath, a fitness and maintenance trail, and a children's playground. There is also a marina with space for 40 boats and fishing platforms. By comparison, water sports are the main focus at Bitetos, while the Parque Fluvial offers the listed paths, leisure areas and facilities. These differences give you specific points of reference if you would like to combine cultural interests with a stay by the water.
