In Baião, a variety of routes invite you to explore: monastic history and sacred art, traces of early settlements, crafts and outdoor activities each offer a different focus. When planning your stay, you might first consider which of these aspects interests you most, then round out your choices with the landscape and local cuisine.

Heritage between monastery, castle and settlement

The Monastery of São André de Ancede was an important economic, cultural and religious centre. The Igreja de São Tiago de Valadares preserves a different kind of testimony: its 15th-century wall paintings depict saints and scenes from the life of Christ. Baião’s heritage thus brings together religious buildings and artworks from different periods.

At Castelo de Matos, the lord of the territory chose the site for a castle that, by the mid-11th century, was shaping the fortunes of the Terra de Bayam. A knight’s spur found there is considered to be a unique find from the period of the Christian Reconquista anywhere in Portuguese territory. At Castro do Cruito, you can see two lines of walls, the surrounding moat, the remains of two towers at the settlement’s upper entrance, and the remains of round and rectangular houses. Ponte de Esmoriz adds a further historic structure: the single-arch bridge crosses the Rio Ovil in the former Couto of Ancede.

Collections, crafts and opening times

MACC Baião – Mosteiro de Ancede Centro Cultural is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. Last admission is at noon in the morning and 5 pm in the afternoon. Casa de Tormes also has set admission times: guided tours take place Tuesday to Sunday, with entry at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30 am, 12:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 pm. If you plan to visit both places, allow for their different schedules.

Casa de Tormes houses the complete archive of Eça de Queiroz, including the author’s documents and personal belongings. Since its publication in the Diário da República on 29 November 2023, the Manufatura das Bengalas de Gestaçô has been included in Portugal’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Casa das Bengalas de Gestaçô has a museum, a workshop where the making process is demonstrated, and an exhibition and sales area. You can explore the subject of crafts through both their cultural significance and the different spaces at the Casa.

Cycling routes and landscapes

Centro Cycling de Baião opened in 2017 next to the Centro Hípico. Together, the two municipal facilities form a leisure and sports complex linked to nature and outdoor activities. Several routes start there, vary in difficulty and explore areas including Serra da Aboboreira, Serra do Marão and Serra de Castelo de Matos. A municipal information notice from 2024 lists seven bicycles in different sizes and helmets available for families to use free of charge; rentals were requested through a dedicated app. If you plan to use this service, check availability in advance.

From Alto do Baião, you can take in the full sweep of the surrounding area shaped by the Douro landscape, with its small chapels, manor houses and quintas. Serra do Castelo lies entirely within the municipality of Baião, between the uplands and the headwaters of the Douro’s tributaries. Serra da Aboboreira, by contrast, extends across the municipalities of Amarante, Baião and Marco de Canaveses; its higher elevations are generally above 700 metres.

The rivers also shape the landscape in different ways. The Rio Ovil is considered a tourist attraction for its clear water, well-maintained river beaches and abundant fish. The Rio Teixeira is regarded as having a higher level of conservation and ecological value within the municipality than its other rivers.

Traditional cuisine and choosing where to stay

Biscoito da Teixeira is a traditional pastry associated with festivals and pilgrimages in northern Portugal. In Baião, anho assado com arroz de forno is one of the dishes served on feast days, at weddings, baptisms and birthdays. Two annual food festivals are associated with this dish: the Festival Anho Assado com Arroz do Forno and the Feira do Fumeiro, Cozido à Portuguesa e dos Vinhos de Baião. Check the event dates before your trip.
