The Igreja do Salvador de Lufrei lies along the Caminhos de Santiago, and the 6 km Rota do Marancinho passes through Lufrei. This offers different ways to enjoy a stay: religious heritage and a connection to pilgrimage on the one hand, and a designated walking route on the other. Local history also stretches far back, making Lufrei a destination where culture and outdoor activity come together.

Church on the Way of St. James and the Rota do Românico

The Igreja do Salvador de Lufrei has been part of the Rota do Românico since 2010. Its location along the Caminhos de Santiago also connects it to the pilgrimage routes. The church is believed to have been founded in the 12th century, at the time the Benedictine monastery of Salvador de Lufrei was established.

To get there from Amarante, follow the N15 towards Mesão Frio and Régua. Then follow the signs to the church.

Walking Trails and Practical Information

The Rota do Marancinho (PR1) is a 6 km walking trail that passes through Lufrei. One section of the route includes an old Roman road; much of it follows the stream of the same name. Its length and course give the walk a clear framework. If you want to include the route in your day’s plans, you can take into account both the stated distance and the stream along the way.

Another footpath in Lufrei is the old path of Capela da Quinta. It is for pedestrians only and connects the street of the same name with Rua de Frariz. Barriers on Caminho da Capela da Quinta prevent motorized traffic. Before setting out, check the path conditions on this pedestrian-only route between the street of the same name and Rua de Frariz.

A footpath also leads to Capela do Divino Salvador. A report from March 2025 mentions a handrail on the steepest section and a rest area with two stone benches. Check the physical path conditions before your visit.

Traces of a Long History

Human settlement in Lufrei dates back to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. A settlement from Roman times is recorded near the former Via do Marão; it may have been a villa or a vicus.

The Rota do Marancinho connects its walking route with a section of an old Roman road. Together with the history of the Igreja do Salvador and its links to two cultural and pilgrimage routes, this gives Lufrei several distinct historical points of interest. The Roman road section of the Marancinho and the history of the Igreja do Salvador highlight different aspects of Lufrei’s past.

Music and Travel Planning

Local culture includes the de Bombos group “Amigos da Borga,” the only traditional drum group of its kind in the Freguesia of Lufrei. It regularly performs at the June festivities in Amarante. If you are considering this as part of your trip, check the event dates before planning your days around it.

These different themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.
