Figueira e Barros combines a distinctive hilltop setting with religious architectural history, nature observation and traditional games. Views of the surrounding landscape, the Capela de São Brás and the Estação da Biodiversidade offer different points of interest. When choosing what to see, you can therefore start with your own interests: is your trip focused on architectural history, nature or a specific type of event?

Hilltop Setting and Religious Architectural History

Figueira e Barros is situated on a hill and offers a privileged view of the surrounding landscape. Its elevated position gives the place a distinctive landscape feature; it offers a different way to experience Figueira e Barros than focusing more closely on individual buildings and events.

The Igreja Matriz de Figueira e Barros is dedicated to São Brás, Saint Blaise. The Capela de São Brás is another religious landmark: it dates from the 13th century and features Romanesque architecture, with Gothic alterations added in the 14th century. The chapel therefore reflects a clear sequence over time: the Romanesque construction phase was followed by Gothic alterations. Visitors interested in architecture will find not only a dedication here, but also a specific architectural evolution.

Figueira e Barros’s cultural heritage also includes historical and megalithic sites. Together with the two churches, they shape the area’s cultural character, without necessarily implying a particular visitor route. The dedication of the Igreja Matriz and the construction phases of the Capela de São Brás offer different ways to understand religious history and architecture.

Nature Observation along the Ribeira Grande

The Estação da Biodiversidade de Figueira e Barros was established along an approximately 1.5-kilometre section of the new PR Fontes e Moinhos da Ribeira Grande. This section is in the Freguesia de Figueira e Barros. The approximate distance refers to the described section of the trail.

The route links three different landscape features: it begins in a traditional olive grove, follows the banks of the Ribeira Grande and ends in the Montado. This also makes the station interesting for travellers who want to focus on landscapes and nature observation. Rather than describing a single landscape, the route passes from olive grove to riverbank and then to Montado.

The station is part of a national network of marked trails. Information boards cover insect and plant species that can be observed along the trails. The nature focus thus brings together two specific themes: the landscape along the trail and the species highlighted by the boards. The station therefore offers a distinct nature and learning focus alongside the area’s religious architectural history.

Traditional Games, Festivals and Sport

The Feira Franca includes a district tournament in the traditional game Jogo do Burro. It is listed in the calendar of the Associação de Jogos Tradicionais do Distrito de Portalegre. The Feira Franca also features food stalls selling roast chicken, bifanas, grilled chouriço, cakes and farturas. These dishes are part of the festival and add a specific event offering to its cultural focus.

A 2023 Feira Franca programme included a guided seven-kilometre walk through the Galeria Ripícola da Ribeira Grande. The 2023 Trail Mestre de Avis featured a short 18-kilometre trail, as well as a mini-trail and a ten-kilometre walk. The start and finish were at the Figueira e Barros sports area; the routes ran along the Ribeira Grande and its surroundings. The two walks offer a specific comparison of the stated distances: seven kilometres in the Feira Franca programme and ten kilometres at the Trail Mestre de Avis. The 18-kilometre trail is a different event format. All these distances refer to the 2023 programmes.

Figueira e Barros also hosts some athletics and traditional games events. The area also offers good conditions for hunting. The interests described therefore range from traditional games and athletics to nature observation and hunting, without forming a single unified sports programme.
