Get to know Crato E Mártires through its architectural history, ecclesiastical architecture and regional cuisine. The Museu Municipal do Crato offers an overview of different periods; the ruins of Castelo do Crato preserve traces of a medieval castle and a later fortress. When planning specific visits, it is important to check the museum opening hours and arrange an appointment to visit the clock tower.
Museum, Churches and Architectural History
The Museu Municipal do Crato is housed in a palace dating from the mid-18th century. It offers an overview of the prehistory of the Concelho do Crato, the Roman presence in the region and the historical role of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The order is also known as the Hospitaller Order or the Order of Malta. The museum’s themes therefore span from prehistory to the medieval and early modern history of the order.
The Igreja Matriz do Crato dates from the 13th century. Its three naves comprise five bays, lined with 18th-century azulejos. The annual patron saint’s festival in honour of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is celebrated on 8 December. Another church complex is the Igreja e Edifício da Misericórdia: it was built in the 17th century and extensively remodelled in the 18th century. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso also dates from the 18th century. On its façade, a large window forms the opening; there is no exterior door.
Fortress, Palace Remains and Views
The ruins of Castelo do Crato are also known as Castelo da Azinheira. The surviving features include bastions of a modern fortress built over a medieval castle. The Castelo was the setting for two royal weddings: D. Manuel married D. Leonor de Castela there; the wedding of D. João III and D. Catarina de Áustria took place in 1525. The Castelo can be viewed from a miradouro overlooking the Ribeira de Seda valley.
The Varanda do Grão-Prior and its window date from the 16th century. They are considered the most visible remains of the former palace of the Grão-Prior. Near Crato, the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa is also a particularly original and fascinating example of Portuguese Gothic architecture.
Plan Visits and Routes
The Museu Municipal do Crato is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30; admission is available until 30 minutes before closing. As these opening hours were last updated on an official website in 2022, check them before travelling. The Torre do Relógio/Sineira in the centre of Crato preserves features dating from the 15th century. Visits to the tower must be arranged in advance through the Museu Municipal.
The municipal route “Um Passeio pela Vila” runs through the historic streets of Crato and past architectural monuments. The Rota das Romarias follows a different format: this thematic walking programme by the municipality of Crato combines walking with discovering the area’s history and heritage. Follow the municipality’s access guidance: many paths cross private property and should not be walked individually outside the planned programme.
Regional Cuisine and Events
Traditional Crato dishes include Migas de Batata, Sarapatel soup, Ensopado de Borrego and Alhada de Cação. Regional sweets also have their own names: Tecolameco, Bolo da Sogra and Barriga de Freira. The annual Festival do Crato includes the free-to-enter Feira de Artesanato e Gastronomia. Regional products and traditional dishes are offered there; the handicrafts come from the region, Portugal and abroad.
In the Concelho do Crato, Herdade do Gamito offers visits to vineyards and wineries, wine tastings and access to local sales outlets as part of the Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo. This offering adds a dedicated wine connection to the insights into cuisine and crafts. When planning a visit, you can therefore choose among different areas of interest, including historic attractions, municipal routes and culinary themes.
Water, Green Spaces and Other Local Highlights
Parque Aquático do Crato has a 30-metre waterslide and two separate children’s splash pools. There is also a diving pool measuring 14 by 14 metres and 3 metres deep. Jardim Temático do Crato features several water features on the grounds of Crato’s former mill.
Biblioteca Municipal do Crato also brings together local history and cultural activities. It is housed in an 18th-century building that served as the district jail until the mid-20th century. The library includes a reading room, daily newspapers, books, a video library, a children’s area, a mini-auditorium and an exhibition room. Alongside the museum, churches and historic buildings, this history offers several ways to explore the town’s past.
