Explore Campo Maior through a range of cultural themes: from the centuries-old military history of its fortifications to the journey of coffee from plant to roasting and consumption. Everyday history and a moderate circular route also feature among the options. You can plan your stay around your interests: history, ethnographic insights or a specific subject.
Fortifications and Walking Route
The Centro Interpretativo da Fortificação Abaluartada de Campo Maior brings to life the history of a fortification that spans centuries of military history. Guided visits include the fortress walls, the castle and exhibits on Campo Maior’s military history. A visit lasts approximately 90 minutes. As schedules may change, check the latest schedule before your visit.
Campo Maior Castle stands at the highest point of the town and offers a panoramic view of the town and surrounding landscape. It was rebuilt during the reign of D. Dinis. Another way to explore the fortifications is the “Percurso Defesas de Campo Maior” (PR4 CMR): this moderate circular route is 7.5 km long and takes approximately three hours. It leads from the town centre along uphill streets to the highest point of the former military fortifications.
If you’re deciding between the two options, they also differ in the time required: the visit takes approximately 90 minutes, while the walking route takes about three hours.
Local History and Cultural Themes
The Museu Aberto presents the history of the municipality of Campo Maior and its people, from prehistory to the present day. Ethnographic displays show how homes and clothing were designed, which occupations people pursued, and which customs and traditions shaped their lives. Its broad time span and focus on everyday life offer a different perspective from the history of the fortifications.
The Casa-Museu Santa Beatriz da Silva is dedicated to a single historical figure: the first Portuguese saint, who was born in Campo Maior and founded the Order of the Immaculate Conception. The focus here is on her story and role as founder, while the Museu Aberto covers the development of the municipality and its people over a long period.
The Centro Interpretativo das Festas do Povo – Casa das Flores offers an interactive experience with a strong focus on technology. Casa das Flores also tells the story of the Festas do Povo, from ideas about how to decorate a street to “enramação”.
Coffee and Olive Oil
The Centro de Ciência do Café combines scientific content, interactive activities and training spaces to create a learning experience. It covers the journey from the coffee plant’s life cycle to the bean, roasting and consumption patterns. If you’re interested in the different stages of coffee production, you’ll find a clearly defined subject here alongside Campo Maior’s historical and ethnographic offerings.
Olive oil takes centre stage at the Lagar-Museu: the process on display runs from growing and harvesting olives to processing them. The experience follows the work with the olive tree through to the finished oil.
