A washhouse by a spring, churches built in different periods and striking granite formations offer several perspectives on Alpalhão. Sacred art and local customs sit alongside geological features, while museums add a glimpse of everyday life in the past. This mix appeals to travelers who want to include culture, tradition and landscape in their travel plans.
Sacred architecture and history
The Fonte de Baixo was built in the mid-18th century and later fitted with a washhouse. The Capela do Calvário is a typical rural chapel of Alto Alentejo dating from the late 16th century. The Cruzeiro de Alpalhão is part of a Calvary ensemble next to a 16th-century chapel. A distinctive architectural detail can be seen in the primitive apse of the Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda, which features rare sgraffito decoration.
The churches also offer a glimpse into different periods. The Igreja do Espírito Santo, also known as the Igreja da Misericórdia, has an apse dating from the late 14th century. Inside the Igreja da Misericórdia, a painted wooden altarpiece from the late 16th century depicts the Last Supper. The Igreja Matriz de N. Senhora da Graça is thought to date from the early 17th century, although it was already mentioned in a 1511 inventory. Its gilded Baroque main altarpiece dates from the 18th century.
The Torre do Relógio was built in the 18th century. Its base is said to belong to a medieval castle wall commissioned by D. Dinis in 1300. In the old town’s streets, you will also find Marcas de Cristianização on door and window frames in several streets. On Largo de São Tiago, inside the Igreja da Misericórdia, also known as the Igreja do Espírito Santo, there is an image of Santiago Peregrino.
Traditions and feast days
A São João tradition is associated with the Fonte de Baixo. At midnight on the night of June 23–24, people drink the “new water” and moisten the ends of their hair with it so that their hair will grow. The Procissão dos Passos has a different focus: its procession passes five Stations of the Cross between the Igreja Matriz and the Capela do Calvário.
A large pilgrimage takes place at the Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda on the two days after Easter. The Capela de São Sebastião is associated with a procession on the Sunday after January 20 and an auction. Food donations, known as “Ramos,” are offered at the auction. The chapel itself dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and has a vaulted apse and a granite pulpit. The feast at the Capela de São Pedro takes place on June 28 and 29; its Mannerist main altarpiece dates from the 16th century and depicts Mary and various saints. If you want to plan your trip around one of these feast days, check the dates in advance.
Granite, landscape and land art
Focinho do Porco is a large granite boulder about 1.5 kilometers from Alpalhão. Its shape resembles a pig’s snout. The name Cinco Dedos also refers to the appearance of a granite formation: its cracks seem to mark out five fingers. Azul de Alpalhão is a high-quality ornamental granite, described as being more than 300 million years old.
Stone is also at the heart of the Roteiro das Esculturas de Alpalhão, which includes a land-art intervention created as part of the Bienal da Pedra. To reach the Anta de N. Sra. da Redonda, also known as Anta do Vale Joanino, take the EM1004 toward the Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda, then continue along a local road. Confirm the route locally.
Museums and everyday life in the past
The Museu da Misericórdia opened on June 27, 2004, to bring religious objects from several buildings together in one place. The Casa Museu showcases a typical house in the town, along with objects and equipment from everyday life in the past. Another collection is devoted to toys: the Casa do Brinquedo is housed in the former Alpalhão jail and displays more than 200 old toys made of wire or stone, as well as cloth and porcelain dolls.
Two different perspectives can help you choose a focus for your trip: churches, altarpieces and processions reveal Alpalhão’s sacred history and traditions, while Focinho do Porco, Cinco Dedos and the ornamental granite bring its geological features to the fore. The museums complement both perspectives with art, toys and memories of everyday life in the past.
